Nervous about starting school while living with my parents.

Hello everyone!

So I will be starting an LVN program in about 3 weeks and I am soooo excited! I feel very blessed to have been accepted because I worked so hard for this and I finally got in.

Although I am very excited to start this journey, I also feel very scared and nervous. This is why: I still live with my parents, the house is loud, I feel I have no support/help from my family.

I recently quit my job so I can focus completely on my studies since I understand nursing school takes a lot of time and commitment and since I don't have kids nor am I married, I really can afford to not work and stay at home. However, my mom babysits, she takes care of a baby who cries every morning, and 2 more kids 3ys/4ys who are...kids, they are loud!! ALSO, my 14 year old brother is in a "band" (not really but more like a hobby) so him and his 4 older friends come and play the loud drums, guitar....I don't know what other loud instrument. AND, my dad just started working in the backyard with like 3 other guys and it's directly outside my bedroom which I can hear everything, tools, drilling, loud talking.

I am literally surrounded my loud, annoying noise! I feel very stressed out because I won't have quiet time to study or do homework and this is very important to me. I quit my job to get better grades and have more time to concentrate an study but I don't have a quiet place to do so. I feel my parents don't understand that it takes a lot of work and I NEED a place to study, I NEED quiet. I understand my room is not the only place to study, I'm already planning on spending most of the time at the library but they are only opened until 9PM. Where do I go after that? And the weekends they are not opened past 2PM, where do I go then?

I am just feeling incredibly stressed out, I get anxiety everything I hear noises because it reminds me of the quiet time I won't have.

I guess I am just venting, but also wanted to see if anyone has been in a similar situation? Where do you go to study when you can't concentrate at home? What did you do when your parents/family were not understanding/supportive?

You actually have way more support than you realize. The fact that you don't have to work is HUGE. Instead of stressing over getting your studying done after work, you have time, and time is precious. It's easier to find a quiet place to study than to study when you don't have time.

Study outside, study at a coffee shop, study at a friend's house. And thank your parents often for letting you stay there. ;)

I'm in the same situation as you, although my household is not that noisy. I go to the library to study. Sometimes, my friends will open up their houses to study together. There are always coffee shops, McD's, IHOP, or places like that if you don't mind the smell of food. :)

Like the previous posters, I would just go to an outside area to study and do homework :) when I lived with my mom and three younger brothers (all of whom, including my mom, are loud as ever), I made straight A's and didn't have to work. I studied and did homework at my school's library. Moving out is what made things more difficult....

I wish I could live at home, rent free with a live-in baby sitter, while in nursing school. Instead I worry about how my daughter will get diapers and we live off top ramen while I fall asleep studying. If I can figure it out you can too. Be thankful for what you got.

I lived at home with my parents and family through school. It's a huge blessing. I didn't have to worry about rent, food, finances, ect... Try to see some positives. It's actually really wonderful that your family is letting you live with them... Sadly some parents do kick their kids out after high school.

Study at the library when you can. Invest in some ear plugs. Join a study group where you can study at a classmates house if necessary. Maybe get a fan for white noise. You said the library is open until nine and I imagine your dad is done with outdoor activities and your brother won't be playing with his band after that time, so really should that be a loud time anyway?

Im not sure where you live but barnes and noble opens until 10 pm on the weekday so you could study there.

Make school and studying your job. Even if you don't have class early, get up at 7 and get to the library. If you get done with homework, make flashcards / study guides / study / read ahead. Monday through Friday, make it your fulltime job. I was able to do this then relax most Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Consider using earplugs and maybe even investing in a high quality noise-cancelling headphone.

I have 2 kids who are NOT quiet lol when I can't study at the library or somewhere (because I have to be home with them) I put in my earbuds with classical music and tune out the rest of the world. It has to be classical though....something with no words that I don't get distracted by. Sometimes it's just not possible to go somewhere else to study. I agree with joining a study group too....not only will if give you somewhere else to study it helps a lot to bounce your info/ideas off some classmates...I always end up picking up things that I overlooked when I study in a group like that. Just make sure its a good group that can get work done not one that turns into social hour every time you get together

Sometimes I will take the kids to chick fila to play while I study...they have wifi and a big wall of windows between the play area and the seating so they can play I can see them but it's still pretty quiet. Good ear plugs are another option if you can't handle listening to music.

Your parents are allowing to live with them rent free and you feel like that aren't supporting, why? Because they also aren't going to give up their lifestyles in their own home as well? Go to the library, study at the school, go to a classmates house and studying together. Count your blessings because most people would love for the only thing standing in their way to be a noisy house.

Im not sure where you live but barnes and noble opens until 10 pm on the weekday so you could study there.

All the book stores closed where I live. You still have book stores???

OP, go to the library if it gets too loud, thank your parents profusely, and realize that life does not have to stop just because you are going to school. Good luck.
