how much orientation did you receive as a new grad?

I keep reading these posts about new grads being dumped on a floor with little to no orientation.

How much did you get?

Mine was a week with another nurse, after that I was on my own with 5 med/surg pt's with no CNA on the floor. It was tough and totally unfair, but I thankfully survived.

My new grad internship in the ER was 12 weeks. There were tons of classes on top of the scheduled shifts.

I started as a new grad in the ER (in Canada) and had a 2-day classroom orientation and 6 buddy shifts. I spend a LOT of time doing extra reading outside of work and, thankfully, I have very supportive coworkers!

3 months for ortho/ neurosurgery.

I had 17 weeks. And I have really wonderful coworkers, so only felt a little nervous about being on my own.

I was in a Versant program so we had 18 weeks plus lots of classes in that time.

14 weeks- two were classroom, and 12 on the floor!

I had 10 weeks on the floor and several classes (med/ surg). Others on my floor had up to 12-14 weeks. I believe 12 weeks was the standard but our manager was pretty good, at that time, about having leeway one way or the other based on individual needs.

6 weeks on the floor with a preceptor for a renal failure/dialysis med surg floor. Not enough in my opinion.

Specializes in CMSRN.

12 weeks for me. For some who got 12 weeks, they were PCT's or unit secretaries prior to new grad training. I had none of that prior to starting. But I had wonderful preceptors.
