Moving To Tampa from NY _ Tampa Gen Rates?

Published

Hello,

I'm in the process of selling my home here in NY and will be moving to Tampa hopefully within this year. I currently work in Northshore University Hospital in Manhasset and would like to know what are the starting rates for experienced ICU nurses (8 years) in Tampa General Hospital. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

Please use your "search" option. There are numerous threads on Florida payrates, too numerous to count.

I appreciate your input...

Yes, I did use the "search" option many times before I even registered and posted my query and all I get are old threads (from last year) about starting rates for new nurses. I would appreciate any info about Tampa General base rates for experienced nurses in the ICUs.

Again... Thank you for your reply!

If it is a particular hospital that you are interested in, just contact them.

Your salary is definitely going to be lower than what you are getting in NY. No comparison between the two.

You are paying for the nicer weather........and not to have to shovel snow. :)

I have a friend that started there a couple of years ago at 23.00 with a few years experience.

Good luck.

Suzanne, are hospitals in the practice of giving out wages over the phone for those that ask?

Most will give a range, they will not necessarily quote a specific rate for that nurse, unless it is the salary of their new grads that are starting. Most salaries can also be dependent upon the manager in the particular hiring unit, amount of experience, how much they want you or need your skills. :)

The pay rates are considerable lower than NY. And, experience vs no experience in many places in Florida make little difference. And the payrates last year are not much different from the ones for this year.

The powers that be in Florida believe that we get paid "in sunshine".

Well, when Visa Card starts accepting "sunshine" in payment for my bill, I'll believe that.

When I first moved to Florida, 1980, I was paid $6.10 an hour. This was after leaving NYS and earning $27 an hour. Huge drop in pay. And even a bigger drop in respect from physicians and hospital administrators. After six months I left the hospital systems and went into case management. FUNNY, THE AMOUNT OF RESPECT I RECEIVED WHEN THE POWERS TO BE REALIZED I CONTROLLED THE PURSE STRINGS (sorry for shouting). I am no longer working but my contact with nurses who work in hospitals has lead me to believe that the situation has not improved, down here.

Also, a word of advice:

Apply for your licensure by endorsement AS SOON as you know that you are moving.

While things have improved in the last few years, it is not unknown to take monthes to get your Florida nursing license. While some people report waiting 4 to 12 weeks, waits of 4-9 monthes are not uncommon.

While I am a native Floridian (rare breed), I rarely ever go there to work. I do keep my license current as I have elderly family members there and I don't want to go through the incredible hassle of getting the license back after letting it lapse.

If you look through back threads, you will see that Florida has won the dubious honor of leader in the "Salary Hall of Shame" on this BB. Roughly, every couple of weeks, someone posts a "Pay Rates in Florida" thread, just to be disappointed in the payrates there. Or they receive a quoted pay rate and think that the recruiter must be joking.

Good Luck!!!!!

Pay rates here are less but so is cost of living and property. It actually is better financially to live here as compared to NY.

I guess it depends on the area, but I know that here in Bradenton and Sarasota, the real estate has skyrocketted and unfortunately, salaries have not.

For the OP, I would definitely suggest that you contact Human Resources to see their salary ranges. I know that the hospital that I work for (Sarasota Memorial) will provide that information. I, too, came from NY and worked at NSUH Manhassset (med secretary) and the payscale was a big letdown in general.

Best of luck,

Actually for the best money agency nursing is the way to go. Theres several in the Tampa/St Pete area. Alot of them also pay benefits if thats an issue - ie spouse not providing them. I know of one agency that pays in the $35-40 hr range. From the ship postings I have seen in the last couple weeks there definately isnt lacking in work. PM me if you want specifics.

Rj:rolleyes:
