Moving To Tampa from NY _ Tampa Gen Rates?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello,

I'm in the process of selling my home here in NY and will be moving to Tampa hopefully within this year. I currently work in Northshore University Hospital in Manhasset and would like to know what are the starting rates for experienced ICU nurses (8 years) in Tampa General Hospital. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

You also might want to try the VA @ James Haley. No salary caps there. :)

I appreciate your input...

Yes, I did use the "search" option many times before I even registered and posted my query and all I get are old threads (from last year) about starting rates for new nurses. I would appreciate any info about Tampa General base rates for experienced nurses in the ICUs.

Again... Thank you for your reply!

Contact Tampa General directly. It's far more accurate that way. Coming from the northeast, you'll get a big shocker. The pay is far LOWER in Florida: among the worst in the US.

Pay rates here are less but so is cost of living and property. It actually is better financially to live here as compared to NY.

It seems to me that the property rates have risen a huge amount. Florida no longer seems like an easy place to get "more house for the money."

Thank you for the replies.

I called them up directly and needless to say, I was very disappointed. I guess this is to be expected especially coming from NY. I am thinking about doing Travel nursing now. Maybe do some local assignments in the Tampa area for a short while. But i'm just concerned on how travel nursing as a job will affect my future plan to apply for a mortgage loan. I know that real estate has skyrocketed in Florida. But I got such gain from selling my house here in NY that I could afford it.

Again, thanks so much for all the valuable information you all had posted.

In my area north of Bradenton, you might start out at about $21/hr. base salary. Shift diff, experience, education, specialty, and weekend diff, plus clinical ladders push it up a bit.

Most salaries level off after about 7 years in the same facility. I recommend the federal facilities because there are no salary caps, and apparently they will pay you for your years of service, plus the benefits are good.

If you want to be a traveller in FL, please be aware that you won't make that much more than pool staff, although pool staff usually doesn't have benefit options. Also, in the summer, you won't find much work. We usually use travellers from November to April or so. After that, we all get called off for low census days and agency nurses have a hard time making ends meet all summer.

You mentioned making alot on your house in NY. Keep in mind that houses are very expensive here in Fl, but they pale in comparison to "up there". I recently moved from Philadelphia. I made enough profit on my house to buy a modest home here in cash. My property taxes are very reasonable ( unlike the 3-5000/year in the Philly suburbs I was seeing) and most other things are a little bit cheaper. Unfortunatly, Florida has usually been a place where people had to bring northern money to. When I grew up here, hubby and I were making a pittance, I mean really bad money, houses were less than 100,000 (mostly) at the time, but that may have well been a million dollars for what we were making. Things are different now, because we spent a few years away, this is sad but true.

Also, there is no state and local taxes here. I was paying i believe 2.5% to sate and a whopping 4.9% to local taxes. I am making $5 less an hour than my philly new grad friends(I am also a new grad) For my husband and I, we are living in a house we wouldn't have been able to afford in philly area.

It's not all bad news, but it is tough if you started out here. $19/hr is "decent" money, but I am making a whole dollar more an hour than my husband who is a delivery driver. It's not really a fair wage.

But, personally, you couldn't drag me back to Philadelphia. So, best of luck to you. I think you'll be happy.

Yeah, i know that real estate ain't that cheap anymore in Florida. I got a brother in New Tampa that just bought a condo for what would had been a brand new 4 bedroom house a year or 2 ago. The gain I have from selling my house will indeed enable me to pay cash for at least a new 4 bedroom house and considering the taxes there, I think my family would be able to live more comfortably than staying here in NY. I am paying close to $10,000 in property taxes here in LI right now which will probably increase next year. Ridiculous I tell you. I love NY don't get me wrong but it's just too damn expensive. I think this move will turn out good for me and my family. It will take me some time to adjust but hey, we all have to make sacrifices.

Thank you for wishing me luck. I appreciate it.

The pay rates are considerable lower than NY. And, experience vs no experience in many places in Florida make little difference. And the payrates last year are not much different from the ones for this year.

The powers that be in Florida believe that we get paid "in sunshine".

Well, when Visa Card starts accepting "sunshine" in payment for my bill, I'll believe that.

Check for seasonal contracts starting Oct-Jan, ending usually May. All hospitals in Sarasota, Bradenton, offer them. Most do in St Pete, and Tampa, to Fort Myers. The pay is really close to the same at all. 37 days, 42 nocs. No benefits. Most have a 4-5000 bonus. I've worked winters there for the last 4 years. Sarasota Memorial is a great hospital. (magnet) But there are several good ones. All will start hiring contracts soon.

If you stay, your salary stays the same, just no bonus.

Good luck!

Actually I am in Florida as a travel nurse now, my company this year did not see a drop off in "seasonal" needs this year as past years. Not many bonuses to be had at the moment I might add. Other travelers I have med with other companies are seeing the same thing. My assignment I just finished had no seasonal drop off this year- last week we were holding pts in the ER, not the typical "season" hold volume but holds none the less.

Rj:rolleyes:
