  1. Pay rates here are less but so is cost of living and property. It actually is better financially to live here as compared to NY.
  2. Be careful where you want to work (unit). NFRMC is for profit and have high nurse/patient ratios in some of their areas. I work for HCA in lake city but have done clinicals at both facilities and have friends that currently work for both. Both friends like it but friend at NFRMC works in a specialty area. If I had to choose I would choose shands for many reasons.
  3. I would chose the rotational job from the best hospital. If you get your dream job at a place you hate to work then it will no longer be your dream job, I know some days at work I feel like I can not take adequate care of my patients-sometimes I cant even remember any of their names because I have been so busy or have too many patients. All that and I like my job and the hospital I work for!? If that many people have left it is not because of a small offense because nurses do not like change and hate to change jobs. Bide your time and get a little experience on med-surg or something for 6 months and then change to the oncology floor. It sounds like the hospital you currently work for is looking out for their patients best intrest and that is a good thing. Have you thought about staying there on med-surg or something and then moving to their oncology floor? It sounds like you really like your job there.
  4. I have worked in a Florida nursing home in Dowling Park and if I had to be put in a nursing home this is where I would want to be. They treat their residents very well. I too have also seen the prominent members of the community weather it be social or econimic being treated better and have wittnessed administration asking us to do so. I refuse to treat anyone better than the other. They all get treated equally with dignity and respect.
  5. north fla the average is 17-19$ central fl is a little better but not much. if you want tomake money then you need to move to tampa, miami, or palm beach. the thing about north fl though is the cost of living. I know adn's with experience who are making $100,000 a year as DON's and Risk managers. you can get a really nice house for about 200,000$ or a decent one for 100,000$. lots of good hospitals too, especially in Gainesville, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando. If you tell me a general area I could give you more info.
  6. I am unsure of this so I am goin to ask since you brought up the other medications besides the normal insulin and dextrose. Why do they not use digoxin in addition to protect the heart? If low K+ increases the effects of dig then why wouldnt a bolus of dig counter effect the K+ effects on rhythm untill the levels are lowered and then if needed give didibind?
  7. dolls eyes move in the oppisite direction the head is turned and indicated neuro damage unless the pt is a newborn. same as the bibinski reflex.
  8. insulin followed by iv glucose
  9. Maybee becaues of an enlarged spleen and resulting injury to it causing bleeding into the abd????????
  10. I would like to add to this strep thing is something that happened to my 6yr old son. He got strep, 5th's disease, and mono all at the same time (don't ask me how because I'm still puzzled). He was treated for strep with pcn and had a reaction to the pcn because of the mono. He developed a macropapular rash that resembled a 2nd degree burn over most of his body! It was not scarlet fever, the rash from that feels like sandpaper. He has since then taken pcn abt's and had no adverse effects from it. It took us quite a while to figure out what this rash was from and was quite scary. Had me thinking of some really funky diseases like kawasaki (I think I spelled that right).
  11. if it were me i would give it right back to her! its probably what she expects and probably what she wants too. :angryfire
  12. it might be the gloves but if they do break out apply antibiotic ointment and wrap hands in socks or something and sleep like that. also but a really good face lotion like oil of olay and apply it to your hands several times a day. always works for me
  13. I think it is a female thing. But then again I have been studying too long too!!!!!!! :rotfl:
  14. NEVER appear timid in front of a doctor, even if you feel that way! NEVER let a doctor intimidate you or think he/she is better than you! ALWAYS remember that the doctor dose not know everything, theirs and your jobs are both to take care of the patient.
