Burned out on telephone triage
Hello, we are going to a centralized telephone triage center. We are a large cancer center and I have always had a dedicated line for my patients to call me. I fear that the personalization of medicine will be lost. Any one else have experience going to a centralized telephone triage center?

opinion re: care coordination RN
I have an interview for a care coordination RN/Case Mgr job with a major insurance company. Honestly, I have no experience in case mgmt and the job description describes contacting members via phone to id risks for readmission to hospital. I wondered if anyone else has worked this kind of job or knows more what to expect. I was surprised they called for the first interview and now I have a second one scheduled next week. The hours are great and the pay adequate especially with limited experience. Is it too good to be true?

Advice appreciated dealing w parents -long
I have been a pedi nurse about 18 months and have been recognized by parents in our surveys and thanked many times as being a caring nurse. I have never had one complaint until now. I had a family with a newborn admitted with fever unknown origin and were awaiting on blood cultures. Introduced myself in morning and parents said they were leaving to go home and shower and would be back. Okay great when did he last eat see ya later. The baby cried and cried, the PCA and I fed, changed, and rocked as much as either of us could with our patient load. I called the parents after lunch and first said baby fine but just crying is there any tricks to calm him down? She said he likes to be held, I explained very nicely I will rock him (instead of taking my lunch ) but we just don't have the staff to stay with him. She said she would be in soon, two hours later she comes back. She seemed nice enough to me, I chatted with her and her older son while giving some Amp and shortly they left again without telling me they were leaving. Baby slept checked on him a few times, PCA took vitals, etc. Next day I get a call from VP of nursing!! Family said I was the worst nurse, wanted me fired, and report me to board of nursing. They rigged the door and said I never checked on the baby, meds were not given correctly because I didn't do it like the nurse before, blah, blah. VP was very nice just wanted my side. She said she told the family if unhappy with care suggested someone stay with the baby. I guess they had every excuse why one of them could not of course neither one of them works(sorry.. just a little vent). Anyways, I hung up and cried and two days later it still really bothers me. Any advice how to put this incident behind me? Thanks, Teena

We have a wonderful research center close by and I would like to know what is involved in research nursing and what creditentials you need to get into it. Does anyone have any info? Thanks in advance. Teena

Help choosing my first job
I am a new grad looking for my first nursing position. I have several offers, so finding the job isn't the difficult part. I have too many offers to consider!! A little background info: this is my second career, I found the love for nursing while caring for my ill mother, I have always wanted to do oncology, I worked at a respected cancer center while in school unfortunatly they do not hire new grads (they tell me now!!!) and this work cemented the want to work in oncology. Back to the offers...Two are rotational programs, work several floors until you find a fit for you; one is an offer on nuerosurgery floor with hopes for an opening in oncology in 6 mo, last is offer on an oncology floor. So it seems easy, right, just pick the last one BUT this hospital has an awful rep in town. Several nurses have left (rumor: 45 quit in one day), have spoken to a few who have left they say mangement sucks and mandatory 5 12's and lots of sour grapes. Recruiter says this is all nonsense. I did get a warm, fuzzy feeling while there, I really liked the nurse manager and everyone seems down to earth BUT she has only been there 8 weeks (maybe still in the honeymoon phase?) and they recruited her from another state. Can any seasoned nurses give me their opinion, do I take the one I want or am just crazy? Teena

Question: Can new RN work PRN or PT?
I understand the real learning begins at work, which I am scared to death of, but I just can't leave the baby 14 hours a day/ 3 days a week. I am lucky that I am not in a position that I have to work but I want too..some. I can suck it up for a few months for orientation and if I could work one day on the weekends that would help. Also daycare costs are very high around this area and I have two other children. So my entire salary is going to daycare which I can not jusify in my heart to leave the baby alone and still not come out ahead. I would take more time off before I start work but then I am afraid no one will hire me... an RN with no experince. Thanks for all your input. Teena

Question: Can new RN work PRN or PT?
I am pregnant and want to take the summer off and then start my new job in the fall, but I want only work PT or better yet PRN? Does any one know if these kind of positions are available for a new RN. I currently work at a hospital and plan on talking with them but I just wondered if these kind of shifts are available. I graduate nursing school in May and plan on taking NCLEX in June/July. I live in Tampa, FL. Teena

Experienced RN w/kids ready to move
I have lived in central Florida for 12 years and love it for my kids. I suggest South Lakeland area. It's a new upcoming area and the homes are very nice and affordable. It's a short drive to Tampa where salaries are competitive. I liked it there because we were 40 minutes from Disney and 40 minutes from the beach. We moved to Tampa 3 years ago and while I like it here, I liked the Lakeland area better for the kids. We spent lots of time at the theme parks, they always offer year passes and usually some kind of resident discount, but Tampa is just to far for a day at the park. And Lakeland doesn't have the crime, etc as Tampa does. Just don't get caught up in the "redneck" reputation Lakeland can get because there are just as many in the urban Tampa. A home comparison (my personal experience) is 4BR/2.5 bath 2500 sq ft in Master Planned Community: Tampa 269,000 plus taxes, CDD 6,000 a year; Lakeland 189,000 plus taxes, No CDD 2500 a year We recently were almost transferred to Denver and either of these home prices were wonderful and I realized Florida had more to offer than great weather and beautiful beaches and no income tax. Any dirt on HCC
Even if you end up at Plant City you can put your name on a waiting list and when a position opens up you can transfer to the DM campus. You alway lose people every semester so it wouldn't take that long to get over there. I personally like Plant City it is a smaller group and feel we are closer. I have friends at DM and they like it there too. It seems older students go to PC while younger ones at DM. This is my second career so I am not looking for "college" life..been there done that. A big problem with PC campus is there is no food on campus besides a few vending machines. Student government usually brings in free lunches quite a bit that DM doesn't always get. They are supposed to be opening a cafe this fall but we will see. We also get free coffee and hot cocoa that DM doesn't have. Classes always tend to fall over lunch hour so we go to the subway across the street a lot. And I live in New Tampa so it is a short drive on the Interstate for me and don't have to fight the traffic going into town. We have the same teachers at both campuses so the info doesn't change depending on which campus you are on.

Any dirt on HCC
I graduate in May and am looking so forward to being done. Of course, I am planning on enrolling at USF next fall for their bridge program. Some of the teachers have been great while others not so much but, from what I hear that is normal for all programs. My sister graduated from Polk CC and have some of the same stories. I am enrolled at the Plant City campus and have done my clinicals at UCH (Fundies & ortho/nuero) & St. Joe (GI & OB), I will be at the VA and TGH this fall for psych and peds. I hope to do my leadership at Moffitt Cancer Center. I currently work there and plan on nursing there when I graduate. If you won an appeal you may end up at the Plant City campus too, usually that is where they hold open seats for things like that. Good luck and let me know who you have choices of and I may be able to steer you in the right direction. Teena

Any dirt on HCC
I am in my second year at HCC and find it challenging but if you put the time in it you can succeed. I have not heard the rumor that we are being investigated but I find it hard to believe since I know of several graduates whom passed on the first try. They have also instilled a test at the end of every class called a HESI that is a NCLEX style exam worth 10% of your final grade. It predicts how well you will do on the NCLEX and is administered by a third party. Good luck in your endeavors and if you have any other questions feel free to email me. Teena
