Med terminology class?

Published

Have any of you taken a med terminology class? It's no required in my program but thinking it may be helpful. My school is offering online classes for summer. Trying to decide if I should take it. Thoughts?

Yes, I took a med term course. I think it's an important class to take as a health professional, required or not!

I took one before I started nursing school and have found it very, very helpful so far. If you don't know what a word means, knowing all of the stems and being able to break it down makes it easier to figure out the meaning and make an educated guess on a test!

Good day, msmouse99:

While it is not a requirement for admission to clinicals, I've decided to take medical terminology over the summer along with Intro to Human Illness & Disease (another class not required for clinicals) as I believe both will help come time in clinicals. I think it is wise that you are looking at a broader spectrum of what will help you at clinicals as well as beyond clinicals. Should economics be an issue, or maybe sure... but not sure enough, then check out https://www.coursera.org/course/clinicalterminology which is free.

Thank you.

I think that's a great class to take for any health related field. I took a Medical Assisting program 7+ years ago and much of the medical terminology I learned in that program has proven to be a huge help in my nursing classes. I think once you can understand those terms, you can begin to connect the concepts in nursing school.

Good luck to you! :-)

I took one but to be honest, it didn't give me any different information than what they teach in first year anyway. About the only difference is that I already knew some things like dosage frequency, etc (BID, TID, etc....) You could probably find a medical terminology book and easily teach yourself.

I'm going into my 4th semester of nursing school and really don't see how a medical terminology class would have given me any advantage besides knowing a few things here and there that I quickly learned anyway. I agree with lorirn2b. Get a medical terminology book and look it over if you have the interest. JMO.

I picked up my books today (bought from a graduating student in my

Program) and there was a med

Terminology book and flash cards included. So I will save my money and just study it over the summer. :)

We weren't required, but if you completed one prior to nursing school, you got to "comp out" of all the medical terminology quizzes in nursing school. Was definitely worth it!

It wasnt required for my program either oddly enough. I took it this semester online with an easy A. I would take it :)

I took it many moons ago when it was required for medical programs and it was such a huge help to me. I do not regret taking that class at all. One of the best classes I ever took.

I took it this semester. Even if it's not required, I would take it! It was recommended to me by my nursing school's faculty and I feel it definitely gives me a leg up for nursing school in the Fall.
