If I knew nursing was so vindictive, horrible, and crazy like this I would have NEVER entered the nursing program in my school to become an RN.
I am a soon to be finished first year student in an ADN program so I do have SOME clinical experience and know a little bit about real world nursing.
I always thought it would be a decent and respectable career with flexible hours and the chance to actually make a difference. All I see on here is how easy it to lose your job and your license, how burnt out nurses become after the FIRST year and how there's NO camaraderie between nurses.
Makes me want to just get my RN and jump ship and become a CRNA or NP... sheesh!
When I was in college I was a waitress.Talk about a HORRIBLE job.
Seriously.
I'd rather be a floor nurse than do any sort of retail or restaurant work. Because even on my worst day, I just might be saving a life!
Do I sound corny? Maybe. But I actually didn't enjoy being a nurse for about three years, and now I can say the above truthfully.
I 've worked in retail and restaurants and they were a lot better than nursing aside from the pay.
No job is perfect, the same personalities and similar problems will occur no matter what industry you work in.
^This. People suck everywhere, co-workers, bosses, patients/clients, etc. will suck whether you are in nursing or elsewhere. Everyone in even the best job has sucky days. You just have to pick your profession and weigh out for you as an individual...does the non-suck outweigh the suck :)
Well, now that I've read the posts, it kind of makes sense...This may sound dumb, but where are the "good" vent posts about nursing? Why focus on the one bad patient, family, day or whatever when you can focus on the 10 good ones...? I know life isn't sunshine and roses, but that doesn't mean it has to be dog **** either.
As of right now, I DO fit the demographic of a "single, young person" so that means I once I do become a nurse, the world IS my oyster (after I get that one year of exp. of course). But reading the negativity day and day out is starting to skew my view on nursing...
Wait till you are out on the floor as a nurse. Than you will have your own views and interpretations. People are different and react in different ways. After a tolerable day I don't find the need to come on here and let others hear about it.
Well, which one is the truth? The vents on here or the appraisals you give to your families?Well, I've already seen and experienced that in clinicals... I'm not sheltered and I know that real world nursing isn't gonna have my teacher behind me holding my hand... I really don't get why they don't tell us this in school so that way we aren't shell shocked when we do get a real job.
You are in school and getting the information about the down-side of nursing here ... so what's your beef, OP? If we don't tell the bad stuff, we're bad ... if we do tell the bad stuff, we're bad. Sheesh!
OP- I see what you are saying. The one thing I find interesting about the replies to you is that nurses keep saying they "come on here to vent" because people on here are "understanding". Yet when someone comes on here to vent the "understanding" people rip them apart for venting. There is little understanding on this website. I agree with you OP!
TheCareerStudent.......the problem I'm finding with this is that us nurses are tired of non nurses coming on here to vent about US! So as someone already suggested the op, a student correct, should be complaining in the student forum. THE END!!!!!!!
Well then suggest to the website to move his post to general student discussions and we can complain about you there. But I would be willing to bet my pay check that you would go there and complain about students complaining.
You are pretty self righteous to think that you have the right to tell a student they have no right to complain. What you nurses fail to realize is that a lot of the students on this website are accomplished professionals in other fields.
Some of you make it seem as though we could never understand stress. Well I can tell you as an OIF/OEF vet that your idea of your worst day of stress is my idea of a pretty damn good day of my deployments.
This website if for nurses as well as nursing students, if you don't want to see students complain stop eating your young.
P.S. Did you ever think that maybe some of the students were sick of hearing you complain about us? Get over it!

Because they want the money that the hapless student shells out to become a nurse. If they let you know that it is mind-numbing, back-breaking, cut-throat, gritty work then no one would pay the money to go to school. Nursing school is a business just like any other business. Those instructors are going to make the profession seem wonderful, just for their egos alone. It's good publicity for the school and keeps them working as "professors", instructors, whatever.
Well I can tell you as an OIF/OEF vet that your idea of your worst day of stress is my idea of a pretty damn good day of my deployments.
I've got a lot of respect for vets. Many of my family members are also currently serving or past vets, and that is by far not an easy job. I think military and police share a close bond with nurses. Thank you for your service, TheCareerStudent.

Before I started nursing school, I made sure I was aware of the realities of what I was getting into. It's normally a good thing to do before making a major investment.
Just my two (Euro) cents.
