If I knew nursing was so vindictive, horrible, and crazy like this I would have NEVER entered the nursing program in my school to become an RN.
I am a soon to be finished first year student in an ADN program so I do have SOME clinical experience and know a little bit about real world nursing.
I always thought it would be a decent and respectable career with flexible hours and the chance to actually make a difference. All I see on here is how easy it to lose your job and your license, how burnt out nurses become after the FIRST year and how there's NO camaraderie between nurses.
Makes me want to just get my RN and jump ship and become a CRNA or NP... sheesh!
When you enter the real world of nursing, not as a student and you have all the responsabilites, families, stress, limited anount of time and resources and adminstration pushing more from you then you can come back and tell us how great and rosey eveything is.Nurses come here to vent to someone who understands, we dont usually come here to say how great our job is, (we tell that to our families)
Well said!!
Nursing is a great career, but it's very challenging no matter what area you go into. The hours aren't ever "flexible" unless you work in a doctor's office...but as a new grad, you can pretty much bet on working either evenings or nights.
And this is a very good web site for all nurses to vent and find support. To be honest, I feel I would overwhelm my husband if I talked about all this to him, because he doesn't understand, and that's fine. It's nice to find others who understand. And yeah, you're not ALWAYS going to get along with co-workers, but then there are those co-workers who have your back and help you and you know you can count on. Sure, it's not perfect, and yeah, I may complain, but if I didn't absolutely positively want to be a nurse, I wouldn't be...because it's not easy. And yeah, instructors will make it sounds all peachy and great, because if students knew how it was actually going to be, no one would do it....but the important thing to know is that those nurses who really truly want to be doing nursing, will be doing it, because it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and most importantly knowledge and passion.
I'm sorry this shocks you...but this is like a support group for most of us...at least for me. And you'll need support too one day.
I am also a student but by no means do I possess this attittude. If you are unsure why keep pursuing it? I think it's funny that you don't think this kind of stuff exist in other occupations. You say you've seen crime on the street first hand...& what is the significance of that? Seeing something disturbing does not mean that you are able to care for somebody else. Do you possess the qualitites of a nurse? where is the compassion?
I presume you are very young, very naive, arrogant and an extremely critical person.Tell me, why are you in nursing if you hate it so much??
Boy, if you think you've seen everything in clinicals, wait till YOU are in charge of EVERYTHING (not just staff), then see how you go. U might even like it, you never know.
All I can see from your posts is criticise, criticise, criticise. If you hate it that much, get out now. Don't put down everyone who has done the hard slog - it's offensive and shows your true, naive character.
I never said I HATED nursing... in fact, I like it. I like the physiologies and disease process, I like educating family members on different things and medications... It's all a means to an end for me (as of now at least). The thing that I DON'T like, is the whole "eating your young" thing or whatever you guys call it. It's as if you guys forget where you came from... That's no way to act towards someone new, especially someone who is EXPECTED and will make mistakes. Because at the core of it, you're helping someone who's in a worse off position than you are and trying to make sure that they achieve optimal health status before they leave that hospital. And what greater feeling is there than literally being the main cause of someone becoming healthier and overcoming their illness or condition...?
What really prompted this thread was the other thread that I read about a nurse who accidentally killed an infant and was driven to suicide because of it. To me, that's just insane.
And I am not THAT naive about the logistics of becoming something more than an RN (such as an NP or CRNA). And why do nurses have to have subservient and submissive attitudes towards everyone? Why can't nurses stand toe to toe with other members of the healthcare team or at least along side them... in a respectable way of course.

I don't understand how reading a tragic story prompted you to post such a condescending thread. Yes, I did say condescending. I love how you repeatedly use the phrase 'you guys', as if you are somehow different than the many other nurses and students on these boards. Newsflash, you are in the medical world and you are on these boards.
It's very sad that the story did not ignite compassion in you. If you weren't so busy being better than 'us guys' you might have realized how different the world of nursing is. It is one of the most stressful and intimate and personal careers you could ever pursue. I hope one day you can actually learn to appreciate and see it for what it truly is.
Now it isn't clear to me what you are complaining about. And I don't understand either what the story about the nurse's suicide has to do with venting (which is what I thought was the issue) or "eating your young" which is different from venting. Anyway we've given you suggestions to find the more positive stories and there is no reason at all to read things you know you will find disturbing.

Well said wee one! But don't waste your breath. The OP will just continue to bash us 'horrid, unprofessional, whingeing, whiny' experienced nurses. It's not worth the energy even answering anymore.
If this is how nurses are unappreciated and thought of by the general public, well, what can I say, it just saddens me a lot.
Seems like we're all supposed to be lovely, calm and smiling and put up with all the abuse thrown at us!
How utterly unrealistic.

This is a ridiculous thread. I have read lots of the postings especially the OP profound statements and have thought about the things the young man has said. I believe that this forum is a wonderful way to vent frustrations from a very difficult yet rewarding career. I also thinnk that most of the drama and negative posts I read, I said MOST not all, come from people with very little to

I have good and bad days at work. I would say 97% good days and 3% bad days. I have complained on here before BUT, I love my job and my coworkers. I have a great schedule an awesome manager. I absolutely love being a floor nurse. All I can say since you are not even done with a year in nursing school and are having second thoughts then quit or stop reading REAL nurses posts about a bad day at work.
