If I knew nursing was so vindictive, horrible, and crazy like this I would have NEVER entered the nursing program in my school to become an RN.
I am a soon to be finished first year student in an ADN program so I do have SOME clinical experience and know a little bit about real world nursing.
I always thought it would be a decent and respectable career with flexible hours and the chance to actually make a difference. All I see on here is how easy it to lose your job and your license, how burnt out nurses become after the FIRST year and how there's NO camaraderie between nurses.
Makes me want to just get my RN and jump ship and become a CRNA or NP... sheesh!

I know. Tell me about it. How do you think I feel now I'm a nurse?

When you enter the real world of nursing, not as a student and you have all the responsabilites, families, stress, limited anount of time and resources and adminstration pushing more from you then you can come back and tell us how great and rosey eveything is.
Nurses come here to vent to someone who understands, we dont usually come here to say how great our job is, (we tell that to our families)

Well, which one is the truth? The vents on here or the appraisals you give to your families?
Well, I've already seen and experienced that in clinicals... I'm not sheltered and I know that real world nursing isn't gonna have my teacher behind me holding my hand... I really don't get why they don't tell us this in school so that way we aren't shell shocked when we do get a real job.

No, what you see are nurses being human. We all have bad days, but we also have good ones.
You aren't going to remember the posts that say, "I made a difference today," but you are going to remember clearly those that show another side of nursing, the bad days.
There are many great places to work, many days that you impact someone's day in a positive way and tons of great coworkers that you can count on at work for help/a shoulder to cry on/a ear to vent to.
It's like anything else in life - but maybe we should post more about the good days, the patient or family that appreciates everything you do and the coworkers that don't leave you out a limb.
I love being a RN. I have been a nurse for 18 years and although I have had bad shifts, I wouldn't change what I do for a minute.......(unless I win the lottery and then I will be a retired nurse)...
Well, EVERY job has it's "bad days," but you guys seem to have a LOT more bad days than any other profession or job I've seen. I mean you never hear about this crap going on in other professions (as often or as cutthroat at least).

Floor nursing is hell. Doesn't matter where you work, it sucks. You have the right idea. Get your CRNA or NP and be on your own. It is worth the extra effort and work.
You can choose to believe that. There are issues in every profession, but you aren't reading a board about every profession, you are reading a board about nursing.
If 10 people post about a bad day here, that's a lot. Think about the sheer number of nurses working each day.
If you have decided at this point in your education that "we have a lot more bad days than other professions," maybe you would be happier looking into another profession.

Dont be so quick to judge. You are potentially setting yourself up for a very rude awakening. Better to prepare yourself now. If you start on a floor with this kind of 'tude you will get eaten alive and no one wants to see that happen to you or anyone else. Until you have walked a mile in our shoes........

And you would know that how? Have you gone to all doctors dot com, or all lawyers dot com and read their stories? believe me, they DO exist.
We come here to vent our frustrations because almost ALL of us understand. In the real world, while on the job, we have to keep the smile on our face and keep our mouth shut or face the wrath of our bosses.
Yes, there are cuthroat nurses out there. yes there are cut throat teachers/doctors/lawyers.
I have good days and bad days...luckily the good ones outnumber the bad ones.
Please though, try to not handslap us veterans. when you've worked in the real world a few years, come back and tell us how you REALLY feel then

Dear OP, you are 22 yrs old, you'd be shell shocked in any job. No job is perfect, the same personalities and similar problems will occur no matter what industry you work in.
Read the forums with the understanding that not all nurses post here, not all nurses post their great stories and above all that not all nurses are unhappy in their jobs.

Have you talked to any pilots, engineers, teachers, etc. lately? They have private message boards or union boards-so you are correct-you don't hear about it-BELIEVE me there is this type of stuff going on in other professions. btw have friends and relatives in just the 3 jobs I posted-they talk plenty in many different forums.
