when male patient pulls his foley out

Published

what do you guys usually do when a male patient pulls his foley out and he is bleeding where the foley is inserted?

It depends on the patient's needs and condition.

If the Foley needs reinsertion, we usually begin the process with a call to the doc for wrist restraints.

Depends. If the patient must have a foley, it needs to be replaced as soon as possible before edema from the trauma of his self-induced TURP makes it more difficult to pass the catheter. If the decision is to leave it out then you need to watch for signs of urinary retention because of the above (and clotting). In either case you need to watch for signs of infection and that the bleeding stops.

I knew all the guys would find this one horrible. Most time ,very little damage has been done. Clean the meatus, reinsert post haste if that is the plan. If not,ice might help reduce gross swelling. Close eye on I/O , and watch for distension, for at least 24 hrs, notify the doc and hope for the best. Sometimes,it is better to leave it out and clean up as needed if no diaper is possible. If they pull once, u bet they r gonna pull again, and mittens will only make then nuttier,,,lol they always get them off!
