Long hair male nurses

I'm a new grad & also on the job search. (graduated with my BSN)

i have a long hair up to my shoulder so I was thinking if it will decrease my chances of getting a job.

thank you for your advice.

Personally, if hair is clean and tied up, I don't care how long it is male or female. I have a coworker with really long hair to her butt, and she never ties it up. She is inordinately proud of her hair, as if it takes some special talent to grow hair, lol. I am forever finding her hair strands everywhere, and frankly, it's gross.

There is a male nurse I work with who used to have very long hair in a ponytail but he cut it off to get the job b/c he know the culture of the place and that he would NEVER be hired w/ a ponytail. He probably hasn't had a haircut since, and that's been about 10 years, lol. He is an outstanding nurse, so he gets a pass on the ponytail, though pts do complain about it now and then. I have super short hair, and I had a pt complaint about me b/c of it. He said I must be a dfyke (his word, not mine) and that short hair on a woman was unbiblical and he didn't want anyone like me taking care of Him. He didn't get any traction with that, but it was amusing.

Excuse me lady's its not Hercules. It was Sampson if he got his hair cut he would lose his power ( History Lesson Time with teacher KarmaWiseRaven) In Greek Myth Hercules was the son of Zeus who had a mortal mother. He was 1/2 Human 1/2 God. Sampson was in the bible. God told him to help his people to grow his hair long. But like all good stories some chick found out his secret jacked him over cut his hair and turned him in to a slave of her people. These are my thoughts use them as you wish ( Class Dismissed)

It just goes to show you can never win.

OP, do what you want and suffer the consequences later.

If you go into the interview with your hair in a neat ponytail..I see nothing wrong with that.

I don't believe that men have to have short hair to be professional, however, it shouldn't hang all over their face.

Well, if you are that worried about it, cut it to get the job. I mean, it's just hair. It will grow back. Me personally, I love long hair on a guy. My hubby has long hair as does my son. We have had issues in the past about my son's hair and school, but we just cut it enough to please them and it grows back. My point is this... is the job worth the sacrifice of your hair? Like I said before, it will grow back. Just make sure that you keep it looking professional. :-) good luck!

Funny I should run across this thread, watching "Life in the ER", and one of the residents has a braid longer than mine! I'm with the majority here, drool!

Personally, makes not a whit of difference to me.

I say cut it for the job, then you can grow it if you see that others have long hair. I personally if I am a patient I do not want to see hair that falls in your face and gets into the area that you are working in and that goes for girls with long hair and not tied back also. I think that you can't work like that. Besides short hair is easier to take care of. (I know I am older and we couldn't have hair that touched the collar, lol)

"Long haired hippie freaks!" -my Dad

There's a time and place for everything. And a dress code for every situation.

When I worked in Surgery, I wore my hair short. When I worked in a program transitioning Institutionalized Mentally Ill Clients to the community, I wore my hair long.

But the appropriate apparel for both jobs was scrub tops.

Go with the flow. Ride with the tide.

It depends on where you're applying. In my area, long-haired male nurses aren't a problem, as long as the hair is in a ponytail.

if you cut your hair you will loose all your nursing power, skills and judgement...just like hercules.
