This past summer I traveled to Montana to work in a nursing home as a favour for a friend. I was there two months, and it was hard and amazing and I'm seriously considering going back this summer.
Last night my friend called to let me know one of my favourite residents died. My heart is heavy and I'm trying to not break down in tears.
Thanks for listening.

This is why you're an excellent nurse - you do care. Hang in there. Nurses who work in gerentology (nursing homes, home health) are my heroes, as are hospice nurses.

Let the tears flow and savor the memories you made while nurturing and tending to that person during their last lap of life. Nursing homes are the end game for us and we know what the ultimate outcome will be; it's still hard and painful to let them go.
