keeping records on staff members

Hi! I have been told in the past it's not a good idea to keep records on staff members who see me. Now, at another facility I am in trouble for NOT keeping records on staff members! Has anyone had this issue? Thoughts?

I don't keep track of the staff who come in for tylenol or a cough drop. But if it's a bigger thing - I had a teacher with SOB, custodian with chest pain - I do keep record of those. And, of course, injuries get an accident report done so I have that.

We don't, but I think we should. Our teachers are in our computer system but the nurses don't have access to "staff". I think it would be a good idea, not only for the big things, but to show how often these teachers come to us. Sometimes they are worse than the kids.

I do not keep records on staff. The only thing I have are emergency care plans for a couple of staff members that are diabetic, seizures etc.

Anything they help themselves to - I don't write that down because they're grownups.

If I take a blood pressure/assess an owie/etc. - I document in their EHR if they "belong" to campus, or on a Word document if it's someone from Nutrition Services or our custodial staff who technically belong to another "unit." Because how can you prove what you did or didn't do, or show that you've repeatedly told them to go to the doctor and they haven't?

There is a tab in our system for staff members. I only chart more serious incidents, not bandages or ibuprofen.

We keep log of them because sometimes they take up good amounts of mine time which my boss wants us to get credit for.

Also, this just came up the other day here, one teacher is "deathly" allergic to nuts (I had no idea and neither did anyone else!). She has her own epi pen, but I said "it would be nice to know to know these things in case of an emergency".

So, do you guys have medical info on staff members?

I do not ask for the info - the info I have the staff members voluntarily gave to me. I requested they write a plan or request one from their doctor so I can have something in writing if there was an emergency - not just for me but for admin to follow or if I had a sub. With permission from the staff members- I gave a copy of the plans to our school secretary - since if there was an emergency she would most likely be the 2nd notified, or at least the person I would be calling on the walkie for help.

We ask staff to fill out a form of health conditions and medications, totally voluntary. I asked staff to list any emergency information that I need to inform EMS of if needed.

I have no health information on staff, unless someone would come in and tell me themselves. Things like our librarian is pregnant and she came and told me she has gestational diabetes and will be checking her bs, just in case someone "finds her on the floor" someday. But that's the only way I know. And our computer system doesn't list or keep track of staff, so I have no where to chart on use of bandaids, b/p's ect, unless I started a paper trail in a folder somewhere.

I do. At the beginning of the year, I email everyone in the building a form I made up and ask them to return it to me, in a sealed envelope with their name on it. I keep them in my med cabinet to grab in case of emergency. At the end of the year I return it to them and they can fill out a new one next fall or give it right back to me if nothing has changed. I get them back from maybe half the staff.
