My hospital, I'm sure like the rest of yours texts me like crazy on my days off looking for help. This year when I was on vacation I was getting repeated texted from two different managers begging me to come in. I repeatedly told them I was on vacation and then get the apology text. Hours later same thing. This went on for FOUR days!! So my question is, wondering if I should just turn my home phone number in and take my cell off. That way on my days off no text. They need me they can call my house or if it's of major importance send a work email. And then maybe I can enjoy my days off. Any thoughts??

I have both a cell phone and a land line. Work doesn't have my cell phone number, and if they need to get in touch with me, they call my land phone and leave a message.

I live in a fairly remote area, and I don't always have cell phone service. By the same token, sometimes my land line is down. In my case, it's nice to have both, so I always have a backup. Cell phones are nice to have in an emergency situation. But, they can get lost. (Speaking for myself) Land phones are nice, because family or friends that might not have my cell number, can still get my home number from the book. For these reasons I prefer to have both, and don't feel that I have to get rid of one or the other.

We send out mass texts for staffing and I love it. If you don't want to work, don't answer. It actually makes me feel less guilty than if they left a message and I ignored the phone call (weird I know). I just ignore the text instead!

As far as the landline thing, we gave ours up a couple of years ago. One word: LIBERATING!

We also use texting in mass.

Saves the charge nurse from making 80 calls! We finally gave up our landline when the last kid went to college.

The managers and the charge nurses text routinely looking for help, it would be easy jus to ignore it but, they add that little bit of wording "please respond either way". If I did, I would be texting left and right. I'm getting to where I'm really starting to hate this place (job hunting) and this jus adds to it. So I think I'm jus going to block all of em and if they really need to get ahold of me they can call and it will go straight to voicemail. Might save me some aggravation.

They text regarding staffing needs at my work as well. Personally, as a night shifter I love it because if I'm sleeping a text never wakes me up and I can answer/not answer when I am ready.

I have no problem with mass texts. That being said, if I were on vacation, I wouldn't answer requests to come in. If someone has to pull a schedule, they'll see you're on vacation. Like Commuter said, it's probably easier to mass text the lot of everyone rather than call individually.

Depending on your phone you may be able to program an "away message" for that number that automatically replies "ON VACATION" or something to that effect.

The staffing coordinator at my workplace sends out a mass text to all of the floor nurses when a staffing need arises. It is easier and less time-intensive than individually calling 100+ nurses, one at a time.

Commuter,

I understand that. Texting for staffing needs seems very laid back, something that most hospital environments are not.

I had my landline number disconnected a few months ago after realizing that I only used it 10 to 15 times per month at the most.

Anyhow, I use a Motorola cell phone with a stock Android OS for all my phone communication needs. If I do not want to receive calls from a person or entity, I simply block their number with a wonderful app called Call Control. I add a number to the 'black list' if I do not wish to receive someone's calls and texts, and I remove the block when I am ready to start receiving calls/texts from the person or business.

Blocking the number of an unwanted caller/texter can help you enjoy your vacations and days off more, methinks. :)

Call Control is the same app I use. I never thought to blacklist work while I am on vacation. Excellent idea!! Thanks!

Texting you to come in. Reguardless if you're on vacation or not.

Am I the only one who find that 100% unprofessional.

I never give my employer my cell number. I give them my land line and thats it.

I'm old fashioned that way too. I really think bosses texting their employees is unprofessional.

I don't text. My phone doesn't have that option.

My boss calls my phone. Usually both cell and landline, as I don't answer either on my day off. If it's my employer calling.

Anybody who's old fashioned enough to not text, and think bosses texting is unprofessional, has to have a land line.

If my boss repeatedly called or texted me to come in when I was on vacation or had called out sick, I'd very politely request a sit-down with them once I had returned to work to discuss the situation. With a previous job, if I knew that it was my boss on the other end, I may also respond with something a touch snarky, but that was the work culture that I worked in.

When it comes to landlines? Sure, I don't use mine a lot, but I'm a touch paranoid and have lived in some worrisome areas, and will never go without one. 911 dispatch systems can track calls from landlines, but the technology isn't up to pinpointing exact cell phone locations. So in those worrisome locations, if I needed to, I could dial 911 from my landline and scream, knowing that hey, a cop will be dispatched to that address. Soonish.

But, like I said, I'm paranoid about some things and I've never really learned to compute that where I am now living the risk of home invasion is exponentially lower.

I hate mass text! I don't need to see the replies of 100 other people. Mass text drive me crazy!!
