January 6 Select Committee

Published

Things seem to be unfolding rather quickly. Former White House aides and advisors are scrambling to cover themselves as they receive subpoenas to appear and produce documents.

It’s rare when lawyers — as opposed to their clients — take the Fifth Amendment. But Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer who reportedly tried to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election, is now claiming the privilege against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He has just been joined in that posture by one of Trump’s main outside legal advisers, John Eastman.

The lawsuit comes after the committee signaled it would pursue a criminal contempt referral against Meadows because of his refusal to sit for a deposition in the investigation into the Capitol riot. Meadows alleges that the subpoenas are "overly broad and unduly burdensome," while claiming that the committee "lacks lawful authority to seek and to obtain" the information requested.

And apparently Mark Meadows had a power point outlining how to overturn election results.

The 38-page presentation, entitled "Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 Jan," is dated one day before the Capitol riot. It's believed to have been submitted by Meadows after he was subpoenaed by the panel in connection with the insurrection.

Mo Brooks urged a Jan. 6 crowd to ‘fight.’ Now his actions long before the insurrection face new scrutiny.

I'm looking forward to watching and listening as Mo Brooks answers questions about his lies and actions which helped to incite the coup attempt.

I thought that was testified to during a public hearing with capitol police following the attack.

I'm sure that is correct, tmb.  I usually like to watch hearings in their entirety as I find those more enlightening than sound bites chosen by others-- but I haven't had the time lately, unfortunately.

First he persists in the un-American lie and attack on the election system and then he hangs up like an angry teenager.  It would be interesting to know what happened next in Trump's world after he ran from that interview.  History suggests that there was some yelling, cussing and name calling coming from the former president's general direction.

If only he had muttered, "I'm not supposed be taking all these questions," before he hung up.

Yeah. That definitely would have made the lies about election integrity and the 2020 election audits less obvious to the world.

Why was Trump doing that interview, in your view?

The interview just sounded like more of DJT's word vomit. Poor little guy is such a victim, like you've seen before. Not.

Talking about election results, did you catch the reporting on Rachel Maddow's show this week about the discovery of forged/fake electoral documents submitted to Congress. Apparently this came from 5 different states, with the same formatting and wording for each. And most, if not all, were from the same states the Trumpy keeps proclaiming he won. Hmmmm.

Certainly, this should be backed up and verified, but it doesn't seem beyond the efforts of the likes of Jeffrey Clark and Giuliani.

I think it was fair for the NPR reporter to ask these questions, unless he agreed not to ask them ahead of time, which doesn't seem likely because Trump can't shut up about it.  It was in the news again this past week.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday expressed his support for GOP Sen. Mike Rounds (S.D.), who earlier this week was attacked by former President Trump after saying the 2020 presidential election was fair.

"I think Sen. Rounds told the truth about what happened in the 2020 election," McConnell told CNN. "And I agree with him."

The seditious conspiracy indictment alleges that, following the Nov. 3, 2020, presidential election, Rhodes conspired with his co-defendants and others to oppose by force the execution of the laws governing the transfer of presidential power by Jan. 20, 2021. Beginning in late December 2020, via encrypted and private communications applications, Rhodes and various co-conspirators coordinated and planned to travel to Washington, D.C., on or around Jan. 6, 2021, the date of the certification of the electoral college vote, the indictment alleges. Rhodes and several co-conspirators made plans to bring weapons to the area to support the operation. The co-conspirators then traveled across the country to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area in early January 2021.

According to the seditious conspiracy indictment, the defendants conspired through a variety of manners and means, including: organizing into teams that were prepared and willing to use force and to transport firearms and ammunition into Washington, D.C.; recruiting members and affiliates to participate in the conspiracy; organizing trainings to teach and learn paramilitary combat tactics; bringing and contributing paramilitary gear, weapons and supplies – including knives, batons, camouflaged combat uniforms, tactical vests with plates, helmets, eye protection and radio equipment – to the Capitol grounds; breaching and attempting to take control of the Capitol grounds and building on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to prevent, hinder and delay the certification of the electoral college vote; using force against law enforcement officers while inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021; continuing to plot, after Jan. 6, 2021, to oppose by force the lawful transfer of presidential power, and using websites, social media, text messaging and encrypted messaging applications to communicate with co-conspirators and others....

...The charge of seditious conspiracy carries a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.....

Select Committee Subpoenas Social Media Companies for Records Related to January 6th Attack

Quote

Two key questions for the Select Committee are how the spread of misinformation and violent extremism contributed to the violent attack on our democracy, and what steps—if any—social media companies took to prevent their platforms from being breeding grounds for radicalizing people to violence. It’s disappointing that after months of engagement, we still do not have the documents and information necessary to answer those basic questions....

The Select Committee issued subpoenas for records to the following social media companies:

Alphabet’s Youtube was a platform for significant communications by its users that were relevant to the planning and execution of January 6th attack on the United States Capitol, including livestreams of the attack as it was taking place.

Meta platforms were reportedly used to share messages of hatred, violence, and incitement; to spread misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories around the election; and to coordinate or attempt to coordinate the Stop the Steal movement. Public accounts about facebook’s Civic Integrity Team indicate that facebook has documents that are critical to the Select Committee’s investigation.

Reddit was the platform for the “r/The_Donald” ‘subreddit’ community that grew significantly on Reddit before migrating to the website TheDonald.win in 2020, which ultimately hosted significant discussion and planning related to the January 6th attack.

Twitter subscribers reportedly used the platform for communications regarding the planning and execution of the assault on the United States Capitol, and Twitter was reportedly warned about potential violence being planned on the site in advance of January 6th. Twitter users also engaged in communications amplifying allegations of election fraud, including by the former President himself....

This is very interesting. They finally charged someone with sedition despite the word that no one has been yet. Well there you go! It does say it's hard to prove legally though.

I was wondering if they had anything connecting them to Trump. Until I read the part, "All I see Trump doing is complaining. I see no intent by him to do anything. "... Also it seems as reported that plans were being made weeks before Jan.6 riot.

I can see Trump's lawyers grinning with joy that this oath keeper said Trump wasn't doing anything, just complaining"! And that it was planned well in advance to Trump's Jan. 6 speech. This has become quite interesting indeed. I wonder what way it's going to go for Trump and his involvement? Or does this mean he may now have been as involved as much as they thought? Time will tell.
