Things seem to be unfolding rather quickly. Former White House aides and advisors are scrambling to cover themselves as they receive subpoenas to appear and produce documents.

It’s rare when lawyers — as opposed to their clients — take the Fifth Amendment. But Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer who reportedly tried to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election, is now claiming the privilege against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He has just been joined in that posture by one of Trump’s main outside legal advisers, John Eastman.

The lawsuit comes after the committee signaled it would pursue a criminal contempt referral against Meadows because of his refusal to sit for a deposition in the investigation into the Capitol riot. Meadows alleges that the subpoenas are "overly broad and unduly burdensome," while claiming that the committee "lacks lawful authority to seek and to obtain" the information requested.

And apparently Mark Meadows had a power point outlining how to overturn election results.

The 38-page presentation, entitled "Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 Jan," is dated one day before the Capitol riot. It's believed to have been submitted by Meadows after he was subpoenaed by the panel in connection with the insurrection.

Those republicans are still in the process of trying to break our republic for their own political gain.  Shame on Americans for not paying attention. 

Also, this process doesn't really seem very quick. Bannon's hearing for defying Congress's requests isn't even until next July.

The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection is set to recommend contempt charges against former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Monday as lawmakers seek his testimony about President Donald Trump’s discussions and actions before the attack by his supporters.

You know who was never charged with contempt of Congress? The email lady. You know, that person that testified for 11 hours about Benghazi.

I've always felt Meadows was one of the most complicit people in Trump's tribe of sycophants.  All I had to do was listen to him enthusiastically attempt to help Trump threaten Georgia Sec of State Brad Raffensperger on that "I just want to find 11,780 votes", recorded phone call.  Nobody is going to help such a low-status individual.  He doesn't have the evil crazy cachet of some of the other traitors, like Bannon.

Liz Cheney, vice chair of the Jan 6 committee, read aloud some of Meadows's texts from January 6:

“Hey Mark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home ... this is hurting all of us ... he is destroying his legacy,” Fox News host Laura Ingraham texted Meadows, according to the committee.

“Please get him on tv. Destroying everything you have accomplished,” Brian Kilmeade wrote.

“Hey, Mark, protestors are literally storming the Capitol,” read one text. “Breaking windows on doors. Rushing in. Is Trump going to say something?”

Another appeared to come from a member in the House chamber. “There’s an armed standoff at the House Chamber door,” the text read, according to the panel.

 

These are from materials that Meadows freely turned over, before refusing to comply with requests for testimony and more documents. 

I am sure the former guy will weasel out of any responsibility again, but I am happy to see those who abetted him crash and burn.

And, what do you suppose any of this proves?

Any communication between the White House and the rioters?  None, correct?

It demonstrates that the White House Chief of Staff, thus presumably the president, was aware that situation at the Capitol was more than a peaceful protest and did nothing.  

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is against the law to use personal electronics to communicate about governmental concerns. Congressmen pleading for the rioters to be called off seems like a concern.

I don't think anyone is disputing that Trump knew a riot was going on.  Assuming he did nothing as you say, what are you hoping comes from this?

I think the persons who were subpoenaed should produce documents and testify. If there was no wrong-doing, then at least a plan can be made to prevent this from occurring again. If wrong-doing is discovered, then referral(s) should be made to the department of justice. 

Do think it is normal for crowds to attempt to break into the capitol and disrupt the orderly transition of power? And if those crowds are carrying flags with the president's name on them, that he should call on them to disperse and comply with law enforcement?

Trump more than likely didn't commit any crimes.  But he was in charge that day and showed extremely poor judgment in my opinion.

That people are declining to cooperate is interesting.  

Ultimately for me what I find most disgusting is that way before the election Trump set us up that the election was going to fraudulent should he not win, and when he lost he continued that narrative instead of admitting defeat.  This is not how democracy works.   This is unforgivable in my opinion.  Ultimately I hold him responsible for that day.
