January 6 Select Committee

Published

Things seem to be unfolding rather quickly. Former White House aides and advisors are scrambling to cover themselves as they receive subpoenas to appear and produce documents.

It’s rare when lawyers — as opposed to their clients — take the Fifth Amendment. But Jeffrey Clark, the former Justice Department lawyer who reportedly tried to help Donald Trump overturn the 2020 presidential election, is now claiming the privilege against self-incrimination to avoid testifying before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. He has just been joined in that posture by one of Trump’s main outside legal advisers, John Eastman.

The lawsuit comes after the committee signaled it would pursue a criminal contempt referral against Meadows because of his refusal to sit for a deposition in the investigation into the Capitol riot. Meadows alleges that the subpoenas are "overly broad and unduly burdensome," while claiming that the committee "lacks lawful authority to seek and to obtain" the information requested.

And apparently Mark Meadows had a power point outlining how to overturn election results.

The 38-page presentation, entitled "Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 Jan," is dated one day before the Capitol riot. It's believed to have been submitted by Meadows after he was subpoenaed by the panel in connection with the insurrection.

  • McVeigh was Oklahoma City.

Yes, I know.  I was guessing what might have been meant by the reference to a bombing because I couldn't think of one for Kansas City.

Things are individualized obviously.

For me there are certain events I remember such as the Oklahoma City Bombing, the crash of the space shuttle, the evacuation of Saigon, asassinations, etc.  but not specific dates.

Then there are dates and January 6th absolutely stands out as a date I remember because it's often repeated and is big news right now, and might probably remember for the duration, just like I remember September 11th, December 7th (probably because of the famous "Day in Infamy" speech).

Obviously Harris was engaging in rhetoric but it certainly is a date often repeated enough that people are going to remember it with infamy (well some will as there were some protestors there in support of the January 6th protestors).

I would agree in that neither Pearl Harbor nor 9/11 posed as direct a threat to American democracy as January 6th did.

I won't forget January 6th as the worst American on American criminal violence of my lifetime.

That would be terribly unfortunate given the significance of the events of 1/6/21 to the welfare of our republic. Guessing that you are referencing McVeigh and his act of domestic terrorism, I'm wondering if you think there might be any connection between that attack and the insurrection last January.  Do you think there is an evolution represented there?

It seems to me like most Republicans spent the day in a spree of false equivalence and whataboutism talking about attacks on buildings that occurred at or near protests centered around the murder of unarmed black men, "antifa", etc.  Here is a tweet from Tomi Lahren that neatly encapsulates the attitude, saying "Trump supporters had one bad day".

Trump supporters had one bad day and the democrats and media act like it was Armageddon. ****, wait till you all open your eyes and see the lawlessness at our border and on the streets of your leftist-run cities on a DAILY BASIS!

I try to take the long view.  History will see the Trump over truth people in a very bad light.  It may take a while, but it's amazing how things clear up when viewed by objective people not in the thrall of a con man.

Liberal press is having a field day with Senator Ted Cruz sucking up to Tucker Carlson and his large audience.  Many times he's called January 6th a "terrorist attack", wording not well like by Carlson.

Right-wing rage coupled with a sense of disenfranchisement on the part of conservative white males? Yes, the seeds had been sown back then and have since been fertilized by the radio and TV "personalities".

April 19, 1995 was a watershed day for me. I wasn't living in Oklahoma at the time but it is my home. My parents lived about 30 miles from OKC and I had just returned from visiting them with my 4-month-old twins a few days prior to the bombing. A high school classmate of my sister's was an attorney working in the federal courthouse across the street from the federal building. She had recently adopted twin babies and up until a couple of weeks before the bombing, those babies were in the daycare in the federal building. I was an emotional new mom and the deaths of those 19 children in that daycare affected me deeply.

Interesting poll results.  And not surprising, CBS tried to spin it in a way to fit their narrative.

"So far so good? Good. Here’s the thing. That shareable graphic that made a splash doesn’t include all the phrases the respondents were asked to agree or disagree with. Two were left off. One of them was kind of important. The top answer wasn’t in the graphic: A protest that went too far, with 76% of adults saying yes."

"The by-party numbers are telling, too. On whether they’d describe it as “a protest that went too far,” 80% of Republicans said yes, and 69% of Democrats said yes. Those are huge majorities and only 11 points apart."

"The issue is the fact that, in reporting on political division and violence, the description of January 6th that had the most agreement was left out, and CBS Evening News made it sound like multiple choice."

This illustrates how absurd it is to compare the Capitol riot to OKC, Pearl Harbor,  9/11, and the Holocaust.

"If the select committee can so readily violate American civil liberties and mislead Americans about the information it possesses — including information relating to me — I have no confidence that the select committee will fairly or accurately represent any information I could provide," the GOP congressman told Thompson. "And make no mistake, any such information would be directly related to my deliberations and objections pursuant to a statutorily prescribed procedure."

Jim Jordan sure babbled a lot.  He could have merely said "no, I have nothing to say that will be helpful and I don't trust you".
