Is anyone commuting really far away?

Published

So, I dont start NS until January... but i've real been thinking about the commute im going to have to make when I start going. It is about a 45 minute drive (with no traffic), one way. It is mostly all straight highway, so the drive isn't bad, but its so long! I havent had to drive there during rush hour times yet, and I'm a little worried. I've tried to make it a plan that I will leave an hour and 15 minutes before I have to be there. This isnt so bad on class days, but clinical days i have to be there at 6:30  So ill be leaving at 5:15! ill need a lot of coffee.

I am also worried about the weather.. I live in Pennsylvania, in a mountainous area, and snow storms can get pretty nasty here, and there are always accidents on the road i have to take to school (it is a major interstate). The school i go to has dorms, and i was told that students that arent staying in the dorms are allowed to rent them out for $10 a night if we need to. I am happy to have that option, and maybe I wll do that if i know of a major storm coming...

Anyway, just curious if anyone else is crazy like me and driving super far....

I'll be starting my 45 minute, one-way drive to the University campus this January. I'm in Colorado, so snow will be expected, especially in January. I'm not worried about it since I grew up in Alberta and driving in snow is almost second nature, it's the other people I worry about! Luckily some of my clinical sites are near home, one is 5 minutes from my house - YES!!

For the long drive to campus, I will upload lectures to my phone and then listen to those. I also love listening to the pathophysiology lectures off itunes, they make boring drives much more interesting.

poor you! and i thot my commute was bad!

i live about 30mins away with no traffic which really not bad

but parking is a killer at our uni.

i am loss what to do, i like the convenience of having my car nearby

will see how terrible parking is when the semester starts...

Oh my. I have lots of memories of that university parking. My alma mater is a little famous for its lack of parking. During the time I was a student there, it seemed like a parking lot was taken away at the start of every single semester and changed to faculty parking. All these faculty lots would be less than half full and here were students, parking miles away.

My last semester, they did start a transportation service.

Thanks everyone for responding! I don't feel so alone now!

I will be commuting 1hr to my school. Luckily, my dad just retired so he will be coming over to our house to watch my 2 little ones so I don't have to drive them to daycare. I live in kansas so I do expect snow which I am not looking forward to. I don't think I will mind the commute on decent weather days it will be some good alone time.

My daily commute is just shy of an hour one way. Last semester for one clinical rotation I had a 2hour drive each way. Luckily for that one I was able to share a ride with another student.

I try to use this time to decompress. I have a busy household with 3 boys and a husband so I enjoy the quiet time and I also love to listen to loud music. for some reason it clears my head. I also like to listen to lectures or my own recorded notes. I have talked myself through material out loud, and even studied with a friend via phone (on speaker).

It gets in the way some when we are trying to plan study group time, and they all have 15 min or less to campus. I live in rural Michigan, so I am use to everything being a commute of sorts. some winter days that commute can grow by at least a half an hour!

I used to commute to Greeley close to UNC from just Fort Collins, I-25 can get so crazy. People seem to go crazy when it comes to driving in rain and snow LOL

My drive is about an hour and 15 minutes most days. So I drive a total of 2 and a half hours everyday. There are days I have an 8am class, so I HAVE to leave town by 645, which means leaving the house at 615 to get my little guy dropped off at daycare, which means im up at 5am(coffee in hand before leaving the house and a 32 oz pop as soon as i drop my little one off) its a struggle, but i just tell myself its only for 16 more months and it will be all over :) I haven't had to drive in the winter yet but I drive mostly highway there and if i HAVE too, i can go the long way and take highway and interstate (the normal way, i drive the last 10 miles or so residential roads). Just stay positive nad look at the drive as time to review to yourself on the way there, and relax/decompress on your way home! its really not that bad. After a while you dont even realize how long youve been driving.

I live in Florida and, unlike the state nickname, it is definitely not the Sunshine State. Especially during the summer, it rains EVERY day. I also have a long commute, but I am kind of used to it. My school is 45 minutes to an hour away (little to no traffic) and my job is an hour away (little to no traffic). My school and job are also about a half hour away from each other, like a triangle. Use the drive time as self reflection and "me" time. I sing, call up a friend, or just listen to music and think. Might as well enjoy it if you have to do it!

bless you my commute is 35 minutes and im already complaining. I commute from Miami to Ft Lauderdale and iits not pleasant at all. Im just not a good commuter. Im used to everything close

My commute to my LPN program is 2 hours each way. Yes, 2 hours. I am going part time, which helps (fewer days to be there). If I were to do full time, I'd have to move there for the year. Plenty of women in my area do this-they leave their kids and husbands for the 9 months, and just get it done. I am carpooling with someone from my area who is part time as well, which helps. There's no traffic to speak of, but it will be interesting this winter. I will have to stay over some next year, when I have clinicals at 6 am.

It's kind of a nightmare, honestly. I have 2 kids, and my husband travels some for work. I need to find a babysitter to come over at 5:45 am, to get them ready for school and on the bus at 8 am. I have to leave the house by 5:45 to get to class early. But it's either this way, or get a waitressing job (not putting it down, but I need a career and a normal paycheck!).

My commute is 72 miles and takes me about an hour and 15-20 minutes to get there. I live in rural Oklahoma so the roads are not the best. Winter weather is what worries me most, that and the fact that clinicals start at 7 am so I'll have to leave here are 5:30 to get there on time. I've made the commute the past two days and it's not bad, but weather has been fairly decent. I've also been able to leave on time because one of the kiddos has been at her grandparents for the week. So, next week will be the real challange!!

I've been recording the lectures and listening to them again on the way to school and back. I listen to day before lecture on my way to school and then that days lecture on the way home. Hopefully it'll help!!

Mine is 45-60 minutes, possibly longer if traffic is bad, not taking into account bad weather. I'm not looking forward to doing it first thing in the morning when the weather is bad. :~(
