I'm turning 25 soon and I want to be a RN, am I kidding myself? I only have a few general Ed courses taken and well I'm pretty much starting out from the bottom. I've taken breaks between schools and did not take it seriously from the beginning. I get discouraged because everyone tells me that the programs are wait listed and it takes like 4years to get 2 year degree. Anyone out there in my shoes?

I am 36 and by the time I finish the program I will be 38. It is never late to pursue a career. This is a career, not a job. If you don't think you can commit the time and energy to finish it, i would not start it. Some people go in it for the pay, bad decision. Sure the pay is good, but you have to deal with alot of stuff and there's a reason some places pay as high as 30/hour, it's involves alot of responsibility and you are responsible for peoples lives.

It all depends on how bad you want it. If you want to be a nurse badly enough, you can make it happen. When I face things like waitlists, I see them as detours, not roadblocks. I'm 42, I didn't do well when I got my BA. But I'm starting an MSN program next year. there's a lot of paperwork, legwork, research on the internet, and calling people for advise. But in the end it's all worth it if that is your goal. If it is, keep your goal in mind and make a commitment to do so.

Good luck!!

I started my prereqs for nursing when I was 25 after getting a BA in Studio Art. I will be 28 soon and starting my first semester in my nursing program right before that. I am 100% glad I made the decision to go into nursing. I think I would of regretted not at least trying.

Instead of assuming...why don't you walk down to the community college and ASK them.

Based on the OPs questions "anyone out there in my shoes?" it seems she is not actually asking anything the college can answer rather looking for those who have been or are currently living a similar experience and thus can provide personal stories and encouragement

You go girl, 25 is so young

Yes we can!! Good luck to you too.

And also, just FYI to those who think we are feeling "old" in our 20s, I don't think it's that we feel old, but more so that most of our high school friends are already done and into their careers while we are just figuring it out. I know I'm not old, I'd swear I'm still 16 if my birthday didn't tell me otherwise!

I am nearly 26 and am just starting my prerequisites... its better late than never! You don't want to look back 10 years from now and regret not becoming an RN. :-)

You are never too old to learn! The decisions we make in our twenties really matter!

Christine- You are not kidding yourself. If it is your passion to become a nurse, do so. The nursing world would love to have you.. I am 41 and just about to begin the Nursing program in a few months. It took me 15 years to get my AA degree and then another 7 years after that before I decided on what I wanted to do. Alot of life and family happened in the mean time and now I'm at a point that I can do this for me.

Good day, christinem2388:

I just turned 50 this past May. I figured that it will take me 3 to 4 years to get my ADN for the RN program based on getting all of the prerequisite in. So I'll be between 53 and 54 when I take my boards, God willing.

Then I plan to get a job, and work on my BSN, then MSN ,and so on until I'm no longer able to work.

You are half my age; if I can do it, so can you.

Thank you.

AWESOME! I am going to 50 in August, the month I start the ADN program! You are never too old to follow your dreams!

25 for nursing school is NOTHING!!! I'm just now getting used to the fact that me being 22 and starting NS is OKAY, but after being on this site for so long, it's hard to forget that you're not alone in whichever way you're feeling.

On a side note, my aunt started MEDICAL SCHOOL when she was 56, after working in a completely non-medical related field for 30 years. She graduated and is now a doctor :) So, whenever you feel like you can't do something, just think of that!

That is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Your Aunt is amazing!!

I'm 27. I have a 3 year old son, a husband (aka second son.. sometimes), and a huge fluffy dog with LOTS of energy. Yes I only get 4 hours of sleep on a good night during the semester, but it's worth it. I want to make my mark on the world and I want to make someone's life better... keep your goals in mind and you can do anything. It isn't easy, but it's well worth the trauma school puts you through
