I'm never gonna make it!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I had a counselor appointment today with a new one (because the one I was going to before was not helpful and discuraged me a lot) So I told this new counselor I want to get into nursing, she looked at my grades and basically said that I might not make it and to look at other options :crying2: She said I need A's and in order to be considered competative, I need to be a B+ average student. I'm about to do CNA and she said that that wont help because its mostly GPA that they looked at.

I want this with all my heart and if I don't make it, I rather do nothing :bluecry1:

Was this a community college? There are different pathways to becoming an RN. Does the school have an LVN/LPN program? Are there other community colleges in the area? Can you repeat any classes where you got a C or lower if you did?

if nursing is what you truly want to do, don't give up. i had c's and b's in my first year of community college and took a few years off. i came back to school and was able to commit myself and earn all a's in all of my pre-reqs. it is possible and you can do it, but not without hard work!! i am surprised that your counselor did not mention that you could retake classes to earn an a.

good luck!

When I didn't get into nursing last year, my "helpful" pre-nursing advisor told me to change my major and that I was not gonna make it. That made me really mad. And in my university there is only 1 pre-nursing advisor for everyone. So, I talked to my anatomy and physiology professor because she was always really supportive and nice and talked to her about not getting in, and she encouraged me to talk to some other professors who knew a little more about the nursing program, but aren't necessarily a pre-nursing advisor, for more advice. She also suggested that I could technically change my major in order to change my advisor. In the end, I ended up changing my major and advisor for two reasons. One, I'm not going to have an advisor who isn't routing for me and helping me. Two, financial aide will only pay for one year of a pre-major, so there was another reason to change. So I technically changed to Health Sciences (pre-med), but my new advisor was basically advising me on how to get into nursing school this year. My new advisor is just wonderful, I can't rave enough about her. Even on days when I was really down on myself and felt like giving up, she was there for support telling me I'd get in. This monday, I found out I'm on the alternate list for a really really good nursing university and I feel hopeful that I might get a spot!

So, my advice? Don't give up, talk to your professors, and get or request a new advisor. :) good luck, you can do it!

Only god knows the plans he has for all of us. We can be anything we put our minds to. I know that you will make it. Just don't take NO for an answer. Your vision is for you only no one can take that away from you. Keep your eye on the prize. I have had people to tell me that I wasn't going to make it because of my issues with family and life but every semester I get closer and closer. I'm waiting on an acceptance letter as we speak. If it's in my favor or not I'm still going to pursue nursing no matter what. I don't believe in quiting. Keep your faith and you will reap your blessing, good luck!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mean to sound harsh but if you have that "I'm never gonna make it" attitude then you won't. I didn't have the best grades in my pre-reqs, got rejected to a few programs, got my application withdrawn and would've started school this semester because I didn't take the updated TEAS test by a certain deadline (which was completely my fault) but I never gave up. I told myself that it wasn't a matter of if but not when and that when is going to be this Fall at a BSN program. I don't know how many pre-requisites you have taken or what your grades are but if you need to retake classes then do it and do the best you can in the remaining ones. Even if you have to take one at a time, it is better to focus on one and do well than retake them all at once and still get a sub-par grade. If nursing is what you really want to do then you will find a way, even if plan A or B (or C, D, E etc) don't work out, you have to keep trying. Change your study habits or put more time into your studies or find whatever works. Good luck and never give up.

You can do anything you put your mind too. Re-take some classes and prove the advisor wrong! But most of all prove to yourself you can do it. Don't give up on your goal!

it sucks when someone basically tells you youre dreams are @#!*. You have to take it with a grain of salt. if you have to repeat a class, reprat it. if you have to stay up all night studying, so be it. don EVER allow someone to make you feel like you are nothing. it is up to you if you want to be a nurse. i would research LPN programs around you and work your way up to an RN. Prove that advisor wrong and shove your LPN license in her face.

this !!!!

if nursing is what you really wanna to do. never never never take no for the answer ! retake some class to bump up your gpa. apply lvn program, then lvn-rn later. apply everywhere: lottery, waiting list, point system... you never know what will happen.

A lot of schools ONLY look at the pre-reqs and if you don't have the best grades you may be able to retake those.

I have an F on my record and 2 Cs and a very dismal TEAS score. I have mostly Bs except for my specific science pre-reqs for nursing.. I got into a competitive BSN program. My school only looked at the classes they require for their degree. (Thank God my F wasn't considered- but it did bring down my overall GPA)

I get so angry at these so called 'councilors' that discourage students. You CAN do it. Even if you start LPN/LVN and bridge. Don't give up.

Never say never, and don't let your "adviser" put a limit to your future. There are many pathways to become a nurse. So if this is what you want to do with your life, if this is where your heart is, let nobody stop you.

Well, she didn't exactly say you were NEVER going to be a nurse. She just looked at you as you stand now and said your GPA may not cut it right now. So fix it.

If your grades aren't up to snuff, they aren't up to snuff. Figure out what's up and work harder. Study your butt off. Retake classes. The fact is, you're better off figuring it out now BEFORE you start nursing school...stressing about failing out seems much worse than application stress.

Anyway, I'm all for you never giving up your dreams, but we have to live in reality here. Not everyone gets into nursing school, and grades have a lot to do with it. So figure it out!
