I'm kind of ticked!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

When I hired in to the facility I work in now, I was told I would receive a raise after I graduated and then again when I received my nursing license. I was told I would make $14.50 an hour as a nurse.

I started work then as a CNA making $9.50 an hour.

Now I have graduated, they didn't want to give me my GPN raise. Had to fight for it with the administrator yesterday. She said since I had signed a paper in the beginning, it said I would only receive a raise AFTER I was licensed.

We re-read the paper which was typed up when my DON was going to quit, so I would still have a position as a nurse after I was licensed. It DID say that I would receive a raise after I was licensed.

But, in the paper, which I KNEW was a catch 22 when I signed it, it said I would start at new nurses wages. Hindsight is 20/20 they say...(it didn't say $14.50, like I was quoted)

Now, my GPN wage is $11.50 and my nursing wage will be somewhere around $13, they say... :(

Excuse being...we were just bought by a new company and they don't have the new budget yet. I may start at $13 or it may go up to $14...who knows? :angryfire

I'm thinking about giving them a couple of weeks, and telling them that I need to know how much I will be paid since I am going to other interviews and I need to weigh my options....

What do you all think?

Julie :(

julie, what a bum deal !!! that stinks.. yes, i would want to know exactly how much your wage is going to be, as there are other good paying jobs out there for lpn's.

they must think you like the place so much you will work there for anything.

my niece is an lpn and she makes 25.00 an hour with an agency, no insurance of course and only about 20 or so hours a week, but what the heck, it fits her lifestyle right now.

good luck and let us know what you find out.

I am not sure who you made the"deal" with... was it someone who had the authority to make the dollar amount promise?

My facility has a human resource department that handles all negotiations. The manager can't even quote a salary or affect it. The DON lacks the ability as well.

this has guarenteed that no one starts out making more than a seasoned nurse and so on. The have an experience and pay scale and you get offered where you fall in the grid.

My only suggestion I guess is determine if the offer was from someone who could provide it, and if so ask them to honor it.

If you feel strongly about it, file a grievance, even though it isn't in writing, the person who promised the amount will have to state the truth that this occurred.

Good luck

this happened to all employees where i worked once. the facility was bought out and those who had been there for years lost vacation days, sick days, and it was a mess. i came in after this so it didn't affect me directly with the accumulated time, but the pay had dropped as i understood it. the reason being, it was under "new management". let us know what happens.

I was not paid as an RN until I passed my exam and the paper's were in their hands-I thought this was the norm now?

I WOULD START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB......I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE CHANGING MANAGEMENT BUT IF THEY WANT TO KEEP GOOD NURSING STAFF (SUCH AS YOURSELF) THEN THEY SHOULD PAY FOR IT........

NO OFFENSE !!!!!! BUT IS THAT THE NORMAL PAY FOR NEW GRADS? I WOULD STILL LOOK AROUND AND SEE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS STARTING AT $$$ WISE......GOOD LUCK TO YOU, AND KEEP US UPDATED....

Those idiots!!!!!!! Don't they know you are a valuable commodity?

Give your 2 weeks notice, why should you work for them? I am sure you can get hired someplace else for more money. You must stand up to those idiots and not let them walk on you. Good luck

Yup, I agree, tell them it's the $14.50 you agreed to , or two weeks notice. They made you a promise, you remained loyal in hopes that promise would be realized, now they want to renig.

Just next time, get the details in writing. :)

I think you should leave--they sound REALLY unsavory. You could give the choice--start looking ASAP, anyway. Then you know what's out there.

As did I. Maybe different states do it differently? I know where I'm at, a "GPN" is not a recognizable title. You're an aide until you pass boards.

Okay, just for the record, and even taking geographical location into consideration - $14.50 AN HOUR is a disgrace anywhere, anytime for anyone as an educated professional.

Doesn't Home Depot pay on that scale. Hell of a lot less responsibility there. Review ALL your options.

Is this out of line for an LPN salary in your parts? It's about right for my area....new grad LPN's start at 13/hr or so here... RN's start at maybe 16-17...and after 25 years my base pay FT was 23/hr. I do know salaries vary geographically, and between facilities..

Unfortunately, you just learned a lesson the hard way...always get stuff like this in writing. Sorry they did you this way...I'm never surprised at what hospitals will do to save a buck. :(

I would explore my options too. When I interview for jobs, I always ask for the wage offer to be written down for me before I make the decision...so there will be no misunderstanding. Good luck!
