I got hired pretty easily and the hospital isn’t too far from home. They interviewed me for a unit I had no interest in working in and told me I couldn't work in my preferred one bc I know someone who works there. I gave it a chance and honestly, I didn’t come into nursing just to get a job. My heart is in neuro. This feels like self betrayal.
Since I’m still being precepted, I need some advice. Do I apply to other hospitals who can offer me the unit I want to be in and if accepted leave my current job? Or do I finish my preceptorship? Right now I feel very unsatisfied.

Finish your year. Then any neuro unit will be happy to have you.

Ditto to above.
Don't cause problems for yourself re references & insurance. Like with any signed contract?

Honestly, life is too short to keep doing something that makes you miserable. If you are not happy with your situation; start looking for another job in your chosen specialty. However, be aware that potential employers will be very weary of a new grad bailing out during orientation. Neuro is a specialization...that's all you ever will see; starting in a regular unit, as a new grad will give you a great foundation for your practice. Not sure what type of unit you are in right now, but keep in mind that having experience will makes you more attractive to potential employers....and at the end of the day, neuro will always be there.
