Seriously. Why do you need to go to the nurse the second you get off the darn bus?!? You haven't even been to your locker yet! TGIF.

I had a kid with a paper cut waiting in my office for me when I arrived!?! Oh, and the kid I saw after that was crying and c/o severe ear pain and when I called her mom to tell her, she says "That's because her sister gave her ice cream in the middle of the night"

Just had the same thing! 2nd grade Kid comes in off the bus straight to my office.
"My stomach hurts"
Temp check ok, "did you eat breakfast"
Kid shakes his head no and says "I'm not hungry"
"Well, sometimes our tummy's hurt because they are empty. How about a granola bar?"
"No I already had breakfast"
?? "You just said you didn't have breakfast. Which is it??"
Blank stare.....
Ugh. Go to class and at least give it a try! I'm sure I'll see him right after the pledge and announcements. that's giving it the old college try....

You and me both!! My persistent kiddo that whined about his stomach all day yesterday - with 3 calls to mom because we played phone tag and all he got out of it was early pickup from aftercare was just in complaining again. Nope - we're not playing out that scene again. Unless he's puking or burning up i don't want to hear about it.

On the other hand: I had one come in right off of the bus and say "I know this isn't a medical issue, so it's not your problem, but do you have something that I could clean the dog poop off of my shoe with?"
I gave him a toothbrush, he cleaned everything by himself, wiped down the sink after, and washed his hands! I could have hugged him:yes:

This would have earned him a piece of candy from my personal stash!!

Similarly - I work at a summer camp and the minute the kid gets off the bus (he will be staying with us 24 hr/day for 4 weeks) he comes to the health center to have his toe checked out - he hurt it at home. I ask why he didn't get it looked at when he was at home, and he says "mom said to wait to get to camp and have you look at it".. Ok - this is the kind of camp that the parents can afford medical care - and sure enough, we ended up taking this kid all the way into the local town and found a provider, got an xray - yup - it was broken! wow.

Did the sister feed her ice cream through her ear?

um....what????
Maybe it's a cultural thing. My in-laws are filipino and won't put ice in their drinks because they think it will give them a sore throat. If the kids have sore throats they are forbidden to have anything cold like cold drinks, popsicles or ice cream. I suggested to them once that the ice cream might numb their throat and make it feel better. They weren't having any of it.

Wow. How different everyone's annoyances are! It's always so interesting to check in on these types of threads for other specialties and learn a little! :)
Mine this week (granted, a different setting): being or getting stuck at work because of staffing issues and being pestered to pick up additional call. Most on call hours I've had in a while though, so there is that (nice little bonus to my check).

Or the one who comes in complaining literally as soon as she walks in the door saying, "I don't feel good. My mom's waiting in the parking lot."
