I do great in all my pre-req's. Except one semester I failed 3 courses =0
Because I was a freshman and thought that dropping my classes meant not showing up
Oops =( I cried, and then I took the classes over and got 2 B's and an A
I have a perfect GPA 4.0
But there's one more thing, I dropped out of high school and got a GED
I've been a Patient Care Tech for a few years.
Do you think that my application would be competitive when applying to a university?
Think UIC, Loyola, Chicago State?
Or do you think that since everyone and their momma is considering nursing, I don't stand a chance?
Please give me advice.
True. I had a 4.0 at a college before, transferred to the college I'm at now due to military. The grades at my previous college did not transfer but my credit did. I did get accepted to my BSN program though, after scoring an 82% on the TEAS V. So every circumstance is different
Yeah, I've found the same thing. When I transfer, the school starts me over at a 0.0 "school" gpa, so it's kind of like a fresh start. After transferring 4 times, I honestly have no clue what my overall gpa is anymore! My program selected based strictly on the latest attempt in prereqs, but they did have a minimum overall gpa you had to meet to apply. Another school in our area judges only a Prereq gpa BUT to even be accepted into the school, much less the nursing program you have to have a certain cumulative gpa.
So, yeah, every situation is definitely different!

Thats how it is here! Some schools here average your grades, while my school (for BSN) looks at the highest grade you received and your TEAS V score. They don't accept letters of recommendation or essays, just your grades and test. I feel like its more nervewracking and theres no room for forgiveness, but I guess there is because they accepted me! haha
I don't know if the OP's school is similar to mine but our admission requirement GPA is only based on the 3 pre-req classes and nothing else. So I can get a B in A&P and decide I could do better to help my chances of getting into NS and retake it and get an A, and I would have a 4.0. They take the best score on each of the 3 classes and that is the GPA you enter NS with, your core classes don't cound towards your pre nursing GPA, but they do get added in at graduation.
I've transferred colleges twice and once you have so many hours of college work, they stop asking you for HS diploma/GED/ACT/SAT.
Don't count on this. I have a bachelors and a masters degree, both with decent gpas, both from highly ranked national universities. When I applied to my local community college for a career change to nursing, they admitted me as a FRESHMAN! Only 18 of my 190 credits transferred, because they were either in subjects that the community college does not teach, or they were at too high a level, since they only give credit for freshman and sophomore level courses, or they were not part of the course of study for my proposed major. I had to submit my high school transcript, and had to either submit SAT scores or take their reading and writing placement tests.

Well, I guess I could reword that. As long as you qualify as a transfer student, usually they won't care about any high school stuff.
ABOUT THE GPA ISSUE
In my original college, I failed those classes, then retook them, got 2 Bs and an A.
I began a different college after that, because I moved, and they didn't factor in my previous gpa, only the gpa I acquired while attending THAT school was valid there.
Everyone has gotten so concerned! lol Thanks, though. I didn't realize I should've elaborated on that detail.
And yes, I've heard that all classes you ever took anywhere EVER is transferred to a university.
And that's why I'm so nervous :'(
I think that you are a well rounded applicant due to your experience as a PCT. Do you work in a hospital setting? What do you do as a PCT? Phleb and EKGs? If so those are things that will make you look well rounded and capable. If you don't know much about 'nursing theory' or Brenners socilization I would suggest reading a book or two on the subject before writing any application essays. I actually discovered I wanted to become a nurse when I stumbled across Joan Watsons writings on holistic nursing, lol.
I think there are soo many applicants out there with 4.0's that it litteraly isn't enough to be a good applicant any more and that schools look for more than just grades. Yeah everyone would prefer a nurse witha 4.0 but I personally would prefer a nurse with good communication, bedside manner and an understanding of me as a whole person.
Also some, but not all, schools offer some type of academic do-over type thing. I'm not sure what it is called but I know a couple of students who had D's and F's their first year but then got their act together and found a way to petition the school to let them drop those grades and re do the courses.... perhaps you could ask an advisor or counselor if your school has a similar option!
I also have a GED and needed some grade forgiveness, but decided I didnt want to take those classes over. I got in to a pretty darn competitive program with 2 Fs on my record.
I have to add to the confusion....I seriously do not understand how you have a 4.0?
B=3.0, you have 2 of them, you can't have a 4.0
