I m in big trouble! I think I failed my drug screen

Published

Here's the scoop. I was told by another nurse that the facility I work in (I work agency) didn't do pre employent Urinalysis drug screens. Now, I m an occasional pot smoker(never before work. usually about 3x a month), I don't drink, I don't do any hard core drugs. SO anyway, to my surprise, when I went to the physical on Monday... they drew labs, xrays and did a Urinalysis. In about 2 hours I have to go in and get the update of the physical and test results... Guess what? I know they're gonna find thc in my urine. Now, I m not only looking at definitely not getting this job but I might even be turned in to the state boards. I m screwed. I didn't sleep at all last night. My wife's panicked and so am I. There's nothing I can do now. I don't consider myself an addict in any way shape of form. some people drink a couple beers, some do a couple puffs once in a while. Had I been smarter about it, i would have abstained from it.... but being gullible and stupid.. I didn't. God help me!I smoked the day before the test. lesson learned.

That's pretty bad that you wished I would have gotten busted.

Dont worry about it Alex. When people get their beliefs off of a billboard, then it really doesnt matter that marijuana is much safer than alcohol. Let them turn yellow while blindly believing what their government tells them. After all, if the government says it is ok, then it must be!

However, if a person decides that they will run stops signs because the law just "doesnt make sense" to them, then hardly should they judge others for making educated decisions of their own that contradict the law. One is no better than the other, unless you count the fact that running a stop sign could kill someone.:)

Well, Alex, I'm glad you didn't get busted and that you did get a good job. Lord knows, in this economy we all need that. And I hope you're serious about not using--there's no reason to willingly throw your license away. You don't want the State Board breathing down your neck--then you'll REALLY have something to lose sleep over!

I don't use now, but I have in the past. Nearly got busted by the police, so that was the end of that. I had been a nurse for about 1 year. I learned that lesson well. The upshot is, no matter what we feel or believe or wish, in this country marijuana is an illegal substance for which there are serious consequences if you get caught. It's not worth losing my license for it, let alone having to face my family with my shame.

my belief's are what i was taught by my parents when growing up. in my family we did not drink or smoke ( anything) . i am old fashioned and proud of it, i have been a nurse for almost 25 years now, and have seen many drug addicts who smoke weed and i have seen nothing productive come out of it.

i have 6 kids who i am lucky have never drank or smoked. i home schooled them and they were brought up very conserative. i do admit i have given it to my cancer patients for nausea and it has helped them. i can see if you have cancer or a medical reason and it helps fine. But just to smoke it for fun , seems like a waste.

i speak only for myself and what i am like. you are adults and do what you like. but be aware of the consequences if you hurt a pt, or caught with it in urine. you could ruin your life. it's not worth it.

I just want to add my two cents...First of all, STOP ADMITTING WHAT YOU DID...The reason is that anything on boards such as this can be seen by anyone. I was actually on a forum that that was dealing with disputing your credit and ways to get out of paying, whether it was a valid debt or not.

A person had posted questions and comments on a debt she knew was hers by admission, and was trying to get out of paying the debt. One of the ways and suggestion given was make the company prove it was bill or sue them. She tried to sue them and the COMPANY showed up in COURT with all the post she had done on this website. BUSTED!!!!!!!! DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE.

Well Alex, you just have to know that I've played by all the rules, busted my butt in every way possible in life and end up in the same place as the people taking short-cuts. Yes, you should be held accountable for your choices. And I want to have the consequences of my decisions. But that's not always the case. And I don't think pot is bad... it's just a rule and we all have to jump through the same hoops. If someone cheats on a board exam or something they should be brought to justice. I'm sure that person probably knows the same stuff the next guy does, but it's just a rule... you can't cheat, because the board exams are supposed to stand for something-- if you pass, then you're competent and we can trust you. And we have to defend that measure of competence so we can trust in what it means. We're not supposed to smoke weed because we are ethical professionals. RNs are rated #1 in ethics on the Gallup poll every single year counting, except in 2001 when firefighters put us in the #2 spot (due to 9/11)-- we deal with narcs multiple times per shift. We deal with people at their most vulnerable moments in life, physically, emotionally, financially. If you break the rules and do illicit drugs then you are damaging the trust of those wearing the title RN. Seriously, if it were legal I'd smoke a joint right now (I don't work this week:yeah:). Like I said above, if performance-enhancing drugs were legal I'd be on those. But they're not (and those are really bad for you too...) so I stay clean. I do run stop signs in big parking lots though because that's a rule that doesn't make sense to me... if it's midnight and I'm the only person in sight, then I don't even slow down.

I'm not trying to be mean to you and I'm really not that jaded. I just struggle with justice sometimes. Of course as soon as I start putting myself on the righteous pedestal, I'm going to be brought down on several different counts. Ok, I'm finished... how do you like my circular logic?

To me this does not sound like someone concerned with justice-it sounds bitter....What should be most important is that YOU have tried hard to do good-forget about what others may or may not do.That's wasting your good energy in a negative way...that's bad karma...

:yeah: this forum has been a great help. Thanks everyone! This is a great profession, (pay could always be better, of course) but ultimately, it's important to hold ourselves up to a high standard... no pun intended. Today was an eye opener for me. Keep it going and stay strong everyone! Now watch as I hit my head on this wall ...:banghead:

No, I'm serious! My friends smoke (I don't). The smell gets me high. That is all it takes. I swear I don't get why people smoke it when they can just sit in on their friends pass arounds.

Hello Alex,

I will not give you my opinion on this situation, you have had plenty of them. I will wish you luck in the new job. Blessing to you and the wife.

i know a number of people who smoke pot on a regular basis -- a physician friend swears it's kept him from completely losing his sight to his advanced glaucoma. a guy i've worked with says it's the only thing that helps his gut relax and stops the horrific cramping when he's going through an exacerbation of his ulcerative colitis. sister-in-law swears it helps with her killer menstrual cramps (endometriosis and fibroids) and another friend smokes for the nausea associated with chemotherapy. in fact, when i worked heme/onc in the late 70s/early 80s, we used to suggest to our patients that thc would help with their nausea. actually, we'd say "i can't suggest this to you because it's illegal, but a number of our patients have found that smoking marijuana helps with their nausea and stimulates their appetites, allowing them to eat and preventing massive weight loss. of course we cannot obtain it for you, but if your family member would go down to the corner of main and state streets . . . " unit policy was that if we came upon a patient smoking pot in the room, we'd just close the door and come back later.

i agree: it should be legal and taxed up the whazoo!

this is such good advice! i think we often forget that this is a public forum, and as such, is usable for almost any purpose. be careful. :twocents:

They cant tax it because anyone can grow it in their back yard. Only reason its not legal.
