I called in today, no I mean ..I called Out! / huh??

Published

I have noticed some Nurses talk about "CALLING OUT" ( sick, ie..) and some say "CALLING IN" so interesting!!!!! is this like calling :D( for example) a Pepsi a "SODA" or a "POP" I live in the heart of the Midwest and we say "CallING-IN'

I mean..... you are calling-IN to your work place right? I know its trivial..........but I was just wondering....? :)

I'm in the midwest. We say "Call off" Never heard call in/out until this forum.

By the way.. pass me a pop because I don't drink soda (haha)

I only drink pop too (Michigan) but here we call IN

I just find it easier to say..I called to let you know that I can't make it to work today due to.......( fill in)

I don't call anything soda or pop( don't like these words)--I just use the name pepsi, coca cola, mountain dew etc.

Call off. So and so called off today or I am calling off sick today.

I must add......I have heard called off, I have heard called in......recently though I have noticed the called in as a sick call and the called off is canceled, I have also heard called out for called in and I remember thinking "called out? Who's going to fight?" I now live in MA........A patient gown is a JOHNNIE, a water foutain a BUBBLER, pop is a SODA or TOINC, a milk shake is shaken milk...if you want ice cream that's a frappe......one night after work they asked (finally) if I wanted to go out after work for a few POPS ( I thought what a bunch of lightweights) They meant beer!!!!!!! Who knew! It is all location! location! location! I used to joke when I first moved to New England.....I'm not stupid I just don't know the lingo!

I've never actually heard someone say they, "called-out"

Me and most people I know say "called out" here in Connecticut. The only other phrase I've heard is "called in sick" but never just "called in"...

Yup, I live in CT too..I've heard "called out" as in Where is Mary Smith? Oh, she called out.

but I have heard "Oh, where is Mary Smith? I wonder if she called in sick"

On the other hand..I call in..to call out LOL:lol2:

And a grinder is a submarine sandwich. Welcome to New England!!!

And a grinder is a submarine sandwich. Welcome to New England!!!

Funny how each New England state refers to one thing as different things.

This (Connecticut) New England'er calls a grinder a grinder or a sub..but never a hoagie and never a submarine sandwich. We call them subs because mostly we all get them from SUBway Sandwich shops :lol2:. If I get it from a deli or elsewhere I call them grinders. I drink soda (ok, I don't drink it but that fizzy drink that most people do..I call soda). I drink from a fountain not a bubbler. My patients/residents were a Johnny coat. Those colored candies you put on ice cream..yes those are shots..not Jimmies to me. And I call out from work.

I'm in Ohio, I call in when I'm sick, drink soda, slurp water (not "warter") from a fountain, and eat subs or grinders (both terms are used where I live). :)

I've heard "calling-out" and to me they both make sense. Yes you are "calling-in" to work but you are calling to "call-out" of work. Get it? You're calling to say you're going to be OUT of work for that day, hence callin-out of work.
