I called in today, no I mean ..I called Out! / huh??

I have noticed some Nurses talk about "CALLING OUT" ( sick, ie..) and some say "CALLING IN" so interesting!!!!! is this like calling :D( for example) a Pepsi a "SODA" or a "POP" I live in the heart of the Midwest and we say "CallING-IN'

I mean..... you are calling-IN to your work place right? I know its trivial..........but I was just wondering....? :)

Me and most people I know say "called out" here in Connecticut. The only other phrase I've heard is "called in sick" but never just "called in"...

Specializes in Peds.

I'm from MD, and I say I called out. lol

in Ohio I "called off"

In Ok I "called in"

Specializes in mental health + aged care.

By the way.. pass me a pop because I don't drink soda (haha)

And pass me a fizzy bcos I don't drink soda OR pop :p

we use call off to mean work called you and told you not to come in. if we are sick we say calling in sick in south west

Another thing that confuses me is that nurses at our local hospital are "on-call" if they get told to not come in due to low census.

Specializes in Med-Surg; Telemetry; School Nurse pk-8.

Boston:

Called out -- I'm out sick...

Called off -- cancelled. Low census

On-call -- stuck by the phone/held hostage for lowly pay in case they need you.

Called in -- Too many people called "out", you need to get your scrubs on and go in to work.

Bet Caller ID was invented by a frustrated/tired nurse ---- it can be your best friend & the greatest intention ever.

:lol2:

Specializes in critical care nursing, ED, education.

I always assumed the term changed from "calling in sick" to "calling in" so some people didn't have to lie twice. ;-) We tend to have more "sick" employees during event weekends, sunny afternoons, and holidays.

Specializes in ICU, M/S,Nurse Supervisor, CNS.

Generally, where I work, we use the term "calling out." It is interesting the variety of terms used to mean the same darn thing.

Its always been "call in" at the places I have worked whether for sick or vacation time.

Specializes in Telemetry.
in Ohio I "called off"

That's funny! I'm in Ohio and I "call in", never "call off".

Specializes in Med Surg.

In Texas we "call in". "Calling out" would probably get you some wierd looks and more than one "huh".
