I have noticed some Nurses talk about "CALLING OUT" ( sick, ie..) and some say "CALLING IN" so interesting!!!!! is this like calling ( for example) a Pepsi a "SODA" or a "POP" I live in the heart of the Midwest and we say "CallING-IN'
I mean..... you are calling-IN to your work place right? I know its trivial..........but I was just wondering....? :)

I've heard "Calling-off" or "Calling-In Sick" never "Calling-out" or "Calling-In"

have heard this term "called out" in the midwest southern states, basically meaning called-in.

I'm in Australia. We say call in sick in the state I am in, cos we are calling INTO the facility. I have heard various expressions on here as well and it can be a little confusing.
I meant (for example) "I called in today, I have a sprained ankle, and can't come in to work" But some say I called out today" I know, its trivial , but interesting!!
Most languages have various semi-regional dialects. English is not any different.

Here in Northern California we tend to say that we"called in" as in called in sick.To be "called off" means to be called and told not to come to work because of low census or whatever. Calling out?? I don't think I've heard of that except when offering to fight...heehee.. "I called her out" means you better put up your dukes cuz it's on and crackin'!

Have always "called in" to work to let them know I would not be coming in to work today.
