Is it okay for a CNA to call herself a nurse?
did anyone read the whole post i posted? i said i can do what a nurse does because i can go to school and learn it. i did not say i was doing what a nurse does currently. unless you consider taking med calls and calling in scripts to the pharmacy under the direction of an md. as well as the aims testing. a medical assistant can do all that. and apparently i am able to do that since the clinic i work for said i could after i questioned them as to whether or not i am legally able to. the hospital i used to work at had the cnas inserting catheters, cbg testing, bolus tube feedings, emptying surgical drains, dc'ing iv's, and the male cnas held pressure on the femoral artery after the heart caths. we did a lot more than clean poo. no i dont know the whole critical thinking aspect, but i can learn it. i never said that i was practicing as a nurse, but i can do what a nurse does when taught. i believe i am done with this site.

I'm sorry but I am a CNA (have been for 17 yrs) and I have learned a lot thru out my 17 yrs as a CNA. I do not know everything a nurse does, BUT I CAN DO WHAT A NURSE DOES. Can I do it legally ?? NO...can I go to school and learn it ?? YES !! Why are CNA's the hardest ones to teach ?? I don't see nursing as a task, I see it as an educational skill. Nursing is a practice. albeit a scientific practice. The actual provision of nursing care. and in providing nursing care the nurse uses theory as well practice derived from research. The lens thru which they see nursing ??? Because the job is task oriented ?? I don't see nursing that way. and no we can't practice independently, but we can think independently. Don't lump us all in that "arrogant CNA" category. I can be taught PROFESSIONAL nursing skills just as well as you were. I would think that having been a former CNA you would have more respect for the CNA's you work with. A CNA does a lot more bedside nursing than the nurse. Ok I'm done now.

Good luck 025. I'm sure you will do great. When I was walking into the school for my interview there was a girl who was walking out and i recognized her from when I tested cause she tested the same day, so i figured she must have had an interview. she was wearing baggy sweat pants and a baggy hoodie lookin like she just rolled out of bed. i go check in and there is another girl sitting there waiting for her interview, she was dressed like a bus. exec goin to a take over. Then there was me. looking like a middle aged mom wearing office casuals; capris, blouse and sandals. The instructors were all wearing jeans and a blouse. I didnt know if i was under dressed or over dressed.

Is it okay for a CNA to call herself a nurse?
A girl I work with was telling me a story about a friend of hers who went to nursing school to be an RN. she completed the class, graduated and then went to take her boards. She failed her boards (I dont know how many times they let you take it, but she failed them). She was working at Drs office as a receptionist and he was hiring for an RN. This girl had to make a copy of the RNs lic. well she did, she made 2. She took one home doctored it up on the computer, then went to a hosp about 2 hrs away and applied for an RN position. The hosp hired her and she worked as a floor RN for THREE yrs. She moved back to the area applied at one of the local hosp and they checked her out with the BON. only to find out that she didnt have a licsence. So they call her and tell her she got the job and to be there in the morning for orientation. she got a heads up from a friend of hers that worked at the hosp. they had called the police and they were going to wait for her to show up and arrest her for impersonating a nurse. she turned herself in and since she was married to a lawyer she got off with a fine, community service and probation. THAT IS REALLY SCARY. You would think hospitals would check those things when they hire someone.

The interview went really good. The questions were pretty much like you said. One of the questions they did ask was why LPN ? I told them I had been a CNA for 17 yrs and I want to go on to be an RN but I want to experience the role of the LPN. So that way I will know the role of the CNA in relation the LPN and then the RN and better understand the roles of all in the nursing field. I told them about how I have worked in various settings from nursing homes to hospital ICU's and now I am working in a Psych clinic. The experiences I have had in all three settings how I dealt with it ect. I was also asked why nursing ?? So I told them about my mom. When I was 10 yrs old she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and had brain surgery, she various other health issues and 5 yrs later the cancer had come back and she had died from multiple malignant brain tumors. And as I was growing up I had always wanted to do more for her and as I got older I realized that what I couldn't do for her I could do for others. The nurse instructor also asked me why should I choose you and what would you bring to my class room ? So I told her I had determination and I was very assertive and that I could bring my experience and knowledge to the class room. She agreed and even told me that she thought I would be a great asset to the class room with my expereince as well as my knowledge about the nursing field. So that sounded good. They said they would let me know in a couple weeks. So wish me luck and I hope we all get in.

Is it okay for a CNA to call herself a nurse?
So an LPN is not legally allowed to call themselves a nurse even tho the have to take the NCLEX and are Liscened Practical Nurse ?? What state is that ?? And how can that be ?? An LPN is a nurse. A CNA is an assistant..I get that they cant call themselves nurses just like an APN cant call thierselves Dr's. But to go to school to be an LPN and then be told that you are not a nurse is an insult to the title.

Thanks, I sure hope they select me. I am even surprised I got called for an interview. I am really hoping they take the letters of recommendations I got into consideration. I got 2 from the MD's that I work with and 2 from the APN's that I work with. One of the APNs went to nursing school with the asst nursing coordinator. she said they were study buddies and for me to tell her hi from her. I'm usually not one to brown nose or pull the ace out of my sleeve but in this case i will make the exception if it helps me. I hope I get in.

Is it okay for a CNA to call herself a nurse?
Now there was one instance when I was asked if I was a nurse and I said Yes. The Dog & Beth Chapman had a book signing at the local book store and when he signed my book he asked if I were a nurse (I was on my lunch break and dressed in scrubs) so I said Yes...I was not about to correct The Dog...I was in awe that I was even looking at him in the flesh...He was so cool.

I am a CNA and often times pt's refer to me as a nurse. I do correct them when I am asked "Are you Dr. so & so's nurse" I will quite often say " I am the nurse assistant." sometimes I have even heard "well I want to talk to a REAL NURSE". Which is fine, but the REAL NURSE is often the one to tell the pt that I am the person they need to talk to about getting their medicaid/medicare to pay for their medications. (I work in a psych clinic and I do the Prior Authorizations for medicaid and medicare prescriptions). But that is neither here nor there. So many times I go to our lobby to escort a patient back, get their vitals and let the doc know their pt is ready, just to have a 5 other people ask me about their meds. I tell them they need to call the nurse, their response "Well aren't you the nurse??" "NO I AM NOT THE NURSE, I AM THE NURSE'S ASSISTANT." "Well aren't you Cindy the nurse ??" that gets soo annoying. I even have a sign on the wall by my door that says my name and my title. I tell them repeatedly that I am not the nurse. They will call me by both of the LPN's name and I am forever correcting them. I AM NOT THE NURSE !! I don't do the medications I do the vital signs. I once got cussed out cause the pt had talked to the nurse about her medications and the patient didn't like what the nurse had to tell her so when she came in for her appt she cussed me, thinking I was the nurse. I WILL NEVER REFER TO MYSELF AS A NURSE TO A PATIENT...their confusion is bad enough. Now until I become a nurse...I will be a CNA and refer to myself as such.
