Is this common elsewhere ?
I have lateshift today and they called me this morning to come a bit earlier cause someone got sick.
I finally said no this time. Just came to work and everyone is making me feel bad.
I told my boss that it's not my business and im Not getting paid that out group home has staff in a specific time frame. But it is my business to be there when she plans on me. I told her she can count on me to come to work, if Im sick Im sick and won't come but she cant count on me doing shifts from others, that's the own responsibility of them and not mine. Its her job to have extra staff in case someone is sick Not my job.
She said because of me someone else had to come. I said it was because of your other nurse that got sick and the other nurse who came didn't come for me. She came for the lack of self esteem to say no TO YOU. I'm Not getting paid to take care of shift plans,YOU ARE.
Either way my Boss hates me now but she can't fire me because I'm doing my job good and I'm never sick and she knows that. She doesn't like the fact I don't hop in if needed. In my opinion it's unfair trying to make me feel bad for something I can't change. She should be mad at the other nurses who are sick every month

Your boss is a pig...stand your ground.
And another thing. You don't have to be sick to feel justified in declining extra hours... And you don't have to say that you are sick when you tell them "no", if infact, you're healthy as a horse.

Yep, she should be mad at the other nurses who are “sick” every month. If she would start taking her frustrations out on them maybe they would start being more reliable.

Wow!
I sent out an SOS for staff today due to sick calls. A number of my staff often want to pick up extras so I give them first refusal. Or they may prefer to work this day and take a day off later in the pay period. If they don't want to fine.
Your boss is being manipulative but you don't need to respond with emotion either. Get a new job, people leave bad management- vote with your feet.

caliotter3, ^^^this! For those that never call out or are late, but also who almost never work over/pick up extra shifts (for those that do call out at least every 2-3 weeks), you would think they would be the golden children of management. Not the case, they (management) instead directs their subtle anger and hostility toward these quality employees that actually come in to do their jobs and not cover for those that don't.

She's taking it out on you because you have been her staffing plan but now you've finally stood up and said no. Good for you!

Is she wrong? Yes. Does it sound like you handled this well? No.
You can stand your ground without tipping into the land of emotion. I would, were I you, primarily stand your ground by not answering calls from work.

Your boss sucks and it is her responsibility to staff her unit, not yours. Don't answer work calls on days you have no intention of working. If I were you I'd find a new job.

So right or wrong, you have painted a target on your back, and your boss can say that you are "not a team player." Don't give her any more ammunition. I would just keep it calm and professional, don't tell her what she's getting paid for, and don't answer calls from your employer prior to your shift.

I will never understand why people answer the phone if work is calling them on a day off. Do people think they are calling to tell them that you are getting a huge raise? Are they calling to tell you that you you get the next week off on paid vacation as a bonus? I don't think so. Just don't answer if work calls.
And if they b**** and say didn't you get the message or three that I left? Just cheerfully say "nope I must have missed it "
Edit. Try "gosh I get so many robo calls leaving messages that I only check my voicemail once a week. Maybe we should pay staff to be on call so that way if someone is sick and no one else can come in there will be an on-call person whose job it is to come in."

I've told my manager I don't mind staying for OT every now and then but that I also dont want to be the go-to option every time.

So, you are venting here (good) and you are asking if being called in early is common. It is not uncommon to be called and asked to work. It happens a lot in one way or another.
If you don't want to be asked to work then don't pick up the phone if you see that it is work calling. Pretty simple. If they ask you about it later, gently skirt the issue.
My guess is she is mad at you because you told her what you thought, not that you said "no".
