I actually suggested to a pre req nursing student to find another profession and fast

Published

Today while at clinical.......a CNA comes up to me and is smiling and telling me how excited she is to start nursing school in the fall....ect....and she starts to ask me what do you recommend I do to get ready for the fall....

and out of nowhere I respond...

Go into any other program:eek:

I don't even know where this came from. But I have to say that being in nursing school has sucked. I mean it really really has sucked. I hate missing out on my kids dance classes because I am in clincial. I hate not seeing my husband because I have to study, write care plans, drive to and from school, ect... I hate not being able to find the time to walk on the beach like I used to. Or nap. Or even pee without feeling like I could be doing something more productive.

Thanks for listening to me vent.....I am so glad I only have 5 more months.....*wine

OMG, What is going on in nursing schools these days? What on earth are they doing to you guys? I went to nursing school 31 years ago, to Texas Womans University at the Houston campus and we had a lot of clinical and had to do a lot of reports, care plans, med cards etc. I spent a lot of time at the hospital the night before picking patients and finding out about them and then a lot of time at the library (no internet back then). And I had a part time job. But it just did not seem that hard to me. What has changed that is stressing everyone out so much now? I have students that rotate on my floor and they seem to be doing well, doing much of the same thing I did when I was a student. What's up with this?

Let me clarify what I meant by my original post. I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with Love and Logic on this board? OP: YOU made the decision to be a nurse. YOU made the decision to go to nursing school and YOU make the decision everyday to continue. Now YOU have to deal with the consequences and if that means hating school everyday, well, like I said, how sad for YOU.

That doesn't mean that you get to push off YOUR hate for nursing school onto other people. Discouraging someone to follow their path because YOU hate it is just....wrong. I think you see that...otherwise this thread wouldn't have been started. Or maybe you were bragging about telling the pre-nursing student this? I really hope that's not the case.

I agree with quiet a few people in this thread. I am a prenursing student, hoping to start the nursing program in August, anywho...I've been a CNA for 4 years and worked around a lot of nurses. I ask for advice and had questions about anatomy, whatever, and no one has ever told me to find another profession. How discouraging it must have been for that student!!

I am sorry that you are having such a hard time. I've heard it's not an easy task and yes you may have to miss soccer practice/a social life for a few years, but after that your social life is back. I hope that the student you told that to, takes your advice and uses the negativity to work that much harder!! You may have wanted to share some of the good experiences you have had in school too, have you ever touched a patients life? saved someone's life? helped a family after a death? anything that has touched your life and made you want to work hard to become a nurse.

Diane,

IMHO, I believe it is generational.

I totally understand where ur coming from...here is a poem that I picked up at the Students Nurses Association yearly conference in Nashville...

Neglected Children

Author unknown (but had to be a

Nursing student!)

Our home is seldom very clean

The meals are not as good

And we don’t take a bath,

As we ordinarily would.

The hamper is overflowing,

The ironing is seldom done,

And the socks that were neatly in the drawer,

Are practically down to none.

She was a model mother,

The house was shiny and bright,

She was so even-tempered,

And a perfect “guiding light”.

But all that now has changed,

Dust “beneath the bed does pool”,

Where is that wonderful mother?

Why Mother goes to school!

She has no time for cleaning,

We kids must do our best,

We’re having eggs for dinner,

Cause Mom is having a test!

She got a terrible longing,

A nurse she wanted to be,

So she nagged our dad for tuition

And the poor guy had to agree!

So every morning she packs her books

And walks out of the door,

We’d like to try and stop her,

But we’re sticking to the floor!

We take our vitamins and drink our juice,

Cause it would be terribly cruel,

If we caught a cold and fever

And Mother couldn’t go to school!

So if you’re in the hospital,

And on your back you lie

If you happen to see a student nurse

Tell Mom we all said – Hi!

Hope u enjoyed it as much as I did...:redbeathe

What. The. ********? What a horrible poem! Was this written in the 60's or something when dads couldn't figure out laundry and were in the position of "indulging" their wives' nagging to go to school as though it was some whim? She's not a model mother anymore because she's in school? I can understand that school puts stress on a family, but that poem is just sexist.

Gah.

It sounds like the people who had such a negative experience either went to the wrong school, or are in the wrong PROFESSION!

I have had nothing but positive experiences. School has been engaging and challenging for me...I'm in an ABSN program and work 30 hours a week...so it's not like I get to sit back and enjoy it either.

Good luck to those who hate it, I hope I'm wrong or you will never be happy.

There are tens of thousands of vent posts here. Occasionally, people who read them who have never walked a mile in their shoes will come and bash the vent-er, tell them they sure are glad they didn't have them for a nurse, and suggest they find a new line of work if they hate people so much. Usually, other nurses/students rush to the defense of the vent-er. This is not the same thing-- and that's why you got the response you did. It seems to me you either don't want to understand that, or acknowledge it.

Even if the subject wasn't nursing school-- is it funny when someone rushes up to you all smiling and excited about something- anything, and you dump cold water all over them? All I can picture is that person's crestfallen face after you tell them to get into another program-- and fast!! :o

You write something in a public forum- it's not like a group of your friends- people come from all kinds of backgrounds and life stories. If something falls flat, don't just figure it's everybody else's problem if they don't get it.

This is nursing school, I wouldn't want a nurse taking care of me if he could just sail through with nothing required except for hearing a lecture in class and taking a test. I've never experienced it but will soon, and I'm not expecting a cake walk. In the future please don't rain on anyone's parade. I had a experienced RN tell me (an unsolicited opinion btw) to rethink nursing school because new grad's couldn't find jobs. I didn't dignify her with a response. Something I have been working toward for two years and you think I will abandon it because of your soured attitude? No thanks.

I agree! I hated that poem too! I currently work full time and the conditions of that household are pretty much like mine are now being we are always going so much. So not much will change when school starts for me. It's not like everybody who goes to nursing school was a stay at home mom before who just decided to take up nursing school. Why isn't the dad helping? Why aren't the kids doing chores? My husband isn't forking over money for me to go to school, I didn't have to nag him into letting me go. We are working through this together as we always have...

What a great way to make moms who have to be away from home so much feel even that much more guilty for it. Ugh! The auther of this poem can kiss my butt!

While I don't intend to bash the OP for venting, I do have personal experience with my "parade being rained on," so to speak. While I was still completing pre-reqs, I casually mentioned to a nurse at my hospital that I would be attending nursing school. His face curled into a horrific grimace, and he said, "WHY would you want to do that?!" His advice for me? "Run!" :imbar

Although I did not give up based on his comment, it sure threw me for a loop. I think we forget what impact our words have on others sometimes. Those of us with little confidence to spare might even reconsider our dreams if we get enough discouragement.

With all the teaching on therapeutic communication, we might do well to practice this with our classmates, friends, and acquaintances. ("How do YOU feel about nursing school? LOL!) I wouldn't have minded some straight talk or suggestions from the aforementioned nurse, but discouraging a future nurse based on our frustration is only beneficial to us, not them. Not very therapeutic...hehe...:chuckle :twocents:

I don't know. My school isn't easy but so far I am doing pretty well with little effort. I know next semester I will have to put more effort into it but I won't let it consume my entire life. It's just not healthy IMO

I am so glad I am not the only one that found that poem horrifying and completely untrue!!!!
