Recent nurse graduate here...but my question today is being presented on behalf of the students in the cohort behind me who have been backed into a corner and are now “afraid” to speak up and are afraid to take action.
Last week, two professors posted a class recorded lecture onto the classroom portal, D2L, not realizing the recording included a “private conversation” between the two of them after the entire class had logged off.
This recording was viewed by many of the students and included details pointing out and making mockery of students with “accents”, remarks toward how they (the two professors) prefer to have a say in the number of minorities allowed into the program, “hoping” that some of these students fail, included names of students (who actually watched the recording themselves and heard their names being said), and the list goes on.
None of the students recorded the recording and only have information of what they recall/wrote down from this recording.
Shortly after, the two instructors sent out a mass email stating that details of the conversation needs to remain private and respected.
As professional nurses, is this something you feel these students need to remain quiet about? Or should they band together and go to the Dean (who is new) about it and call for yet another investigation?
Note: One of the instructors has already been sued in the past by a student based on similar allegations.
Wondering what your thoughts are?

If so, you should be so embarrassed of yourselves! I’m a nursing student at a different school in the state and saw that post that another student sent me, unfortunately for you you did not get it trending like you hoped. In fact, other people who were able to find the links via You Tube also commented that the comments by the instructors were not that bad as you are claiming them to be. Instructors made comments about the sincere lack of thoughtful discussion posts, students clearly not reading the material before coming to class and yet posting a discussion to get the points, students basically not being responsible adults like you are expected to be! This is NOT high school! I’m in my 30s and have classmates who are right out of high school or in their 20s and have a sincere lack of responsibility and maturity. Those of us who are taking this opportunity seriously (since it’s very competitive to get into nursing school) are pretty sick of people like you and your classmates who are not getting their work done, want extensions, have countless excuses and when it comes to group work we also suffer because you don’t have your *** together. THEN you guys go and complain, do crap like this, to try play victim. It’s seriously disgusting. Be an adult. And do YOU complain about the instructors??? Which is ALSO against nursing student conduct! Don’t be a hypocrite! You kids have not been in the real world, you will have to work with people who are not nice to you, who hurt your feelings or basically tell you the straight truth about you and your lack of work ethic and say “they’re so mean” ?. Be an adult. Take responsibility.
like I said in the beginning, if this is the same person (or friends of the same person) who tried to get the same thing trending on Twitter, the comments made by the instructors were maybe tacky but nowhere near the “horrifying” comments you are making them out to be, you are a generation where you grew-up with social media and you think that getting as many comments and “likes” is important and is life-defining. The rest of us who didn’t grow up with this crap I guess are the ones who have a work ethic and integrity.
And keep in mind, just because you or anyone thinks that they can just go ahead and sue a person or a group of people for “wrong doings”, a lawyer will not just take any case on. A lawyer will only take on a case they know has merit and is worth their time.
Shame.
I think that is a lot of assumptions, and racism is different than being too sensitive about criticism/instructors not wanting to be your BFF that you describe younger generations to sometimes be guilty of. I had to learn that constructive criticism is necessary, for my own good, and not a personal attack. However, it is not too sensitive to react to racism. Also, putting the word out there and trying to get media attention is not looking for likes. Often the only way to get these situations taken seriously is by publicizing them, which puts pressure on the organization to do something so they don't look bad.
For example if there was no video footage of George Floyd's murder or it didn't go viral and spark outrage, I doubt the officers responsible would have been tried, probably just covered for and kept their jobs. It's unfortunate that this is what it takes sometimes, but it's reality. We should stand up for and support those who face racism. It's 2021 people LOL

That needs to be reported. Of course they would like that to remain private.....but then nothing changes

They are trying to do damage control and students need to present it as a group to the dean.
PLEASE do this for your classmates and the integrity of the program. If you are white (as I am) and you don't stand up to protect your minority classmates that is no different than supporting the behavior.
Exactly!! Now that you know, you should help the students to get the ball rolling to report these professors (I use that word very loosly) to the school and media.

Hmmm, while I agree that some of the students are immature and not prepared, this does not mean that this situation did not happen. Professors are flawed people too! Maybe you had a glowing experience in your nursing school but not all profesors and schools are the same. They can be mean, racist and unfair. I know of professors that got along very well with the younger students but were very nasty and hard on the older ones. So, I guess what I'm saying is, cool your jets!
Inappropriate.
Report to Dean of program as a group. Do not tolerate that behavior! The Dean can pull the recording from IT.
They should not be having those kind of conversations period. I would have zero confidence in faculty having those conversations. Don’t we deal with enough in school, work along with personal stuff without dealing with racism? I am amazed at the small mindedness of faculty who need to lead by example!

Indeed. If they choose to not report it, then they are complicit in sustaining the abhorrent attitudes. I think MLK said something along the lines of silence being the greater obstacle to social progress rather than the fervent actions of the detractors.

I think you guys should cc another higher up within the school outside of nursing. Maybe the president of the school. The dean of nursing could be complicit in this systemic scheme.
