Will there never be another surge of positive cases and deaths now?

So, you don't believe that a vaccine will improve our lives? I never implied that rainbows would be coming out of unicorn butts.

No. Covid is here to stay, just like measles never went away. But if we can get herd immunity through vaccination, we certainly can maybe stop wearing masks, business can re-open, 911 services won't be overwhelmed, hospitals won't be overwhelmed, and perhaps some semblance of life before covid can return. One can never really know, but it's all we have. I say let's go for it.

How do we know when "better" will come? It depends on the cooperation on the American people which is very difficult to predict. You are asking a question that has no answer. All we can say for sure is that it will be better when the vaccine is here.
He will be POTUS, I really wish people would stop making excuses for him. So it doesn't matter who is in office as long as there is a vaccine?
You have HCW in another post questioning if they will take the vaccine or not. Sure more in the population feel the same.
I am not going to give Biden any free pass or just gloss things over with a "foot in mouth disease". That was cute in the past, he is President now.

You must have been fit to be tied over the level of "foot in mouth disease" that infected the Trump administration from top to bottom. To this day people make excuses for the ridiculous, inappropriate and dishonest language from Trump...4 years of nonsense and endless benefit of the doubt.

The imagination of Biden supporters should love that one.
While we might be able to take off our masks until we're sure we have herd immunity, it's the best chance we have right now for achieving that.
The vaccine is Trump's. He pushed it and made it operation with "Operation Warp Speed" and it should/could be his finest achievement and a legacy. The problem is that he down played the disease so long, saying it wasn't a big deal, ("look at me, I have it and I feel great!") that we shouldn't have any mitigation efforts, mandate masks, that we should "free Michigan", and has made an enemy of Fauci. Now people followed his lead and the virus is out of control and he has to convince those same people who are sick and dying, overwhelming hospitals and 911, and funeral homes "oh wait, it's a big deal and you need this vaccine". Also his extremist followers on the right are promoting their conspiracy theories.
People think it's a not a big deal, they gather in bars, restaurants, clubs, churches, don't wear masks and have large family gathering like all is already normal, so why take a vaccine if it's not a big deal.
We could have done better at the beginning, come together and tried harder to mitigate and got the vaccine, and unite behind getting it. But we're America and we're dumbed down and the world looks on and wonder what's wrong with us as covid has taken over heart disease as the #1 killer of 2020.
In terms of the American covid experience, Trump is what is wrong with us. Had anyone else been elected in 2016 other than Trump the national response would have followed the previously developed "play book". That pandemic planning had resulted in the USA being rated as well prepared. Trump squandered that. We can't even be certain why he did that. Ignorance? Arrogance?
I went back and listened to Trump's Rose Garden speech introducing Operation Warp Speed. It's fun to listen to him crow about opening the economy.
