How much did you start as a nurse and when.

Just a curiosity thread:

What was your first nursing salary and when did you command what I'm sure is going to be such high salaries? LOL.

Me: 13.18/hr as an RN in San Antonio in 1993.

Ironically, I left my LPN job outside of Baltimore MD to take that job, and I was making 14.50/hr as an LPN in LTC in MD at that time.

(My first healthcare job, as a CNA in 1991: 6.20/hr.)

~faith,

Timothy.

Specializes in geriatrics / peds private duty.

$4.00 / hr as nurses aide in long term care in 1984. I left health care in 1985, and pursued other ventures. I'm finally getting back in. I plan to finish the LPN program in 9 weeks. I'm doing it because I've always had a passion for helping others, but I do hope to get paid a little more than $4.00 an hour!!!

Specializes in ICU, CCU, Trauma, neuro, Geriatrics.

Nurse aid 1975 $2.10/hr minimum wage, I thought I was rich when minimum wage went to $2.30/hr the following year, I got that raise in 4 months. RN 1992 $14.00/hr. I make more than twice that now but I was not given even cost of living raises for a number of years...I didnt like that. Not because of poor performance, but just that nurses did not get raises during the period of 1994 to 2000 in the pittsburgh area. I traveled for a year but came back here to ride the wave of UPMC working with a number of small really nice community facilities.

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

1992 $14.85 as a new RN now make $28.83 plus diff, if in charge another 5%.

Specializes in L & D; Postpartum.

I graduated in 1976 and I think the hourly pay was $5.85. It was under $6.00 for sure. Now, as a per diem and with our contract FINALLY giving part timers years of experience instead of hours of experience, I am close to $40/hour. With Shift Differential and a couple of other things, it's close to $46/hour. And of course, now I'm old enough that I am wanting like mad to say good by to it all.

North Carolina 1994 LPN $12.00/hr

North Carolina 1995 RN $14.77/hr base

Specializes in Med/Surg, Geriatrics.

$12.34/hr in 1991 at a hospital in El Paso, Tx.

$13.00/hr as an ADN RN in 1997 in Mississippi.

Specializes in Geriatrics, DD, Peri-op.

9.18 as a new LPN in Auburn, AL in 1999. Up to 14.00 an hour last year in Florida. Now 19.90 as a new RN but with LPN experience.

Specializes in OR.

Just graduated 3 weeks ago, and I will be making $21.82 an hour. If I go back to evening shift after orientation, it will be $23.08.

Specializes in OR, Nursing Professional Development.

In June 2005 started at $20.40 as a new grad in south central PA, now making $21.72

I was making $6.50 an hour as a home health aide after going to CNA school in 2001. Graduated from LPN school 2004, started with $13.13 base pay at a hospital, now making $22-25 agency lpn working in LTC and hospitals.

me too soccermom. I graduated and got my RN in 1985 and worked for 10.50 /hr in East Chicago IN. now i make 34.oo/hr (very well deserved) in a different suberb, but was wondering what my old area paid now days.

Can you believe we started at that salary?!! Isn't it about time we started making some money? LOL! I know if I stayed I would've hit the salary cap and wouldn't be making as much. I would just get bonuses. That's how nursing rewards us for staying in the field.
