Curious...just how much overtime do you all work? I'm not talking about what you ask for it, but when THEY ask you for it?
Overtime is not required at my facility. However, since I am single with no children, I usually work one 8 or 12 hour shift extra per week. I've been doing that for almost two years though, and starting to get tired. It's hard once you get used to the extra money to go back to straight 36 hour per week paychecks...
At my last facility I allowed them to call me in constantly. What I figured out was the more you give the more they take. Now I dont do any. Occassionally I will pick up for a friend or trade days and a couple of times when the weather was awful I went in as I live closer than most. Other than that I never pick up. I am part time and I like it that way I dont even get OT pay if I do pick up so mostly no way no how not me.
Currently I am signing up for about 12-20h/week and I never go in when called, just because I hate being bothered at home, especially when I'm already doing my part.
But in the last few months I realize how much I'm missing out of my life because when I'm home I'm too exhausted to do anything. Last time I came off a stretch of shifts where there was literally no time to sit between crisises I slept for 30 hours. Not straight, but every 6 hours or so I'd get up to pee, eat and then fall asleep on the sofa again. I think I've had enough and my health is suffering.
We have to sign up for one on-call shift every other month. It used to be every month but we actually have all our nursing positions filled right now (how long can that last?). My husband is also an RN but at another hospital. We have caller ID and all family members know we don't answer the phone from either hospital on the nights we don't work. They can talk to the machine. I know it's cowardly but I can't stand to listen to the whining. Of course it hasn't been too bad from my job what with the 0% vacancy rate.

I work part-time with the goal of not working at all;)
But last pay period I was on-call for OB and ended up staying 18 hours.
I have a life too, like Tweety says and my job is NOT my first priority. Since my kids run the gamut in ages, I know for certain that time absolutely flies by and I'm not gonna miss seeing my kids grow up.

You practically took the words out of my mouth! Very similar situation, I have no desire for OT, would LOVE to not HAVE to work at all...maybe one of these days...:roll

After 40 for me.
I haven't worked ant OT in several months, I was doing a Baylor program and just loved having 5 days off too much to in extra. Right now I would like some OT, to catch up from the holidays, but I just transferred to ICU and I'm still in training.

Regular OT counts after 40 hours a week. Extra shifts are paid at a different rate, hourly base pay + $20, + diffs. Those go on a separate check which we pick up on the in between week. I like to have at least one shift extra every two weeks, but it doesn't always happen. It's much easier to cover the holes in staffing with these shifts.
with census up and staffing down, WE all put in for overtime even if it is just 15/30 min over our shift--got a call last sunday at 645am asking if i could come in for the 730am shift!!!! and this was on the last day of my vacation (i did not go in) but i have stayed over a couple of hours to help the eve shift get settled and over the often crises!!!!!
