Sometimes you have to change jobs in nursing.
1. Bracket creep means that your salary doesn't always keep up in the same job as those behind you. Changing jobs means you are recruited more towards a salary truly in line w/ your experience.
2. Being a great nurse isn't always the same thing as being a great employee. Sometimes you have to make a stand, and sometimes, that stand might lead you to a point where you decide it's time for a change.
Every move I've made in nursing had very little to do with money, although all but the last move involved more money.
~faith,
Timothy.
I've been practicing 4 years in August; I've had my BSN 4 years in May.
5 jobs in 4 years.
Job 1 was for 1 year and 1 month.
Job 2 was PRN for 6 months.
Job 3 was for 7 months.
Job 4 was PRN for 8 months.
Job 5 (current) is for 10 months and counting. In June, this will be the second longest time I've ever retained a job. My job hopping resulted from boredom and unhappiness in my place of employment.
Two jobs. First job one year. 2nd Job 14 years this July. In the second job I've worked on three different units.
To counter what Timothy said. I've been at my job so long, I'm maxed out salarywise and other hospitals aren't willing to come up to my salary should I quit. Here they have a formula they hire by your number of years as a nurse and offer you that. It's not what they would offer a new grad, but it certainly isn't the max of their salary range either. They usually reserve the max for established employees who work record they know. I could demand and say "if you want me, this is what you'll pay as I'm not taking a pay cut", but it isn't easy getting a raise by changing jobs if you're maxed at one hospital. They can counter with "if you want this job, this is what you'll take". So it depends on who wants who more.
Sometimes you do have to switch jobs to go where the money is. This I agree. In nursing, you're not seeing much loyalty to jobs and you see a lot of job hopping.

Just wondering if you could tell me how many nursing jobs you have had and how many years of experience?
