Just wondering if you could tell me how many nursing jobs you have had and how many years of experience?
First job 10 years, 2nd job 5 years, 3rd job 14 years, 4th job 3 years. From then on it gets spotty. I've held and lost several positions (6) with companies that have closed due to bankruptcy or cash flow problems. I have been downsized and "reorganized". It has played havoc with my resume. There is no recent extended employment and no way to check many of my most recent references. My resume makes me look like a job-hopper. I have found that 36 years of nursing experience doesn't count for much. Whats more, companies want less experienced nurses that they can hire for less money.
I've been an RN for 38 years. I worked for 34 year in the same hospital, but did several different jobs there:
gen'l surgical, CCU, SICU, NICU, Infection Control, Night "Clinical" supervisor and, lastly, NICU. The last one I did for 19 years.
I'm currently per diem in a smaller hospital, a smaller Level 2 NICU. I've been here for 3 years.

I was bumped alot during my career as health care shifted in alberta canada. I have had other jobs thrown in there...but this is pretty much it...I think all the variety has made me a well rounded nurse...I am not afraid of change and am willing to work in any area....I have gotten every job I have ever applied for. I went through a phase of applying for jobs just to see if I could get them...I was in an unsettled period of my life....it was fun and great for my confidence. I turned down a lot of neat jobs...now I am settled...have no idea where my career will go in the next 20 years

With 19 years of nursing background, I have had 7 fulltime jobs with the least amount of time was 1 year and the most time was 71/2 years. I have also worked for 2 agencies which I am still on there call list. One of the main reasons that I left any of them was that I just really needed a change due to administrative changes that were of course out of my control. Currently I work for the Department of Veterans Affairs and hope to stay with the federal government after I get my BSN. Nursing is a difficult and rewarding career with a high burnout rate in some specialties. I think all nurses are special because it takes a special person to take care of patients that are at their most volnurable time of their life. I have also done EMS for 15 years but left my certification expire in 2002.
