People talk about how nursing is so diverse and u can always switch specialty areas ..e.g ED to ICU, Tele to L&D..etc or changed hospitals completely. I just wonder how often people actually do that and what impact it has had in looking for other opportunities? So my question is how many jobs have u had since u became an RN or LPN? Ive been a Nurse for about 5 years and have had three jobs..all different settings and all different specialty areas.

I have been a nurse for 2 years. I started out on an Isolation unit, and am now in Telemetry. It wasn't by choice, but when I moved, that is what was available. Very few hospitals I have learned have Isolation units. I loved doing that. I don't care for Tele much. But right now, we are happy to have jobs right?

2! One as float (OB, Surgery, Medicine, Peds) in Canada and one in PCU/tele in the US. Both were great!

I've had multiple jobs in multiple workplaces. With the exception of a psychiatric hospital, the rest of the gigs have been in nursing homes.

In 20 years I've worked in 3 different hospital on med/surg. I've worked in home health. I've been a branch director. I've been a consultant for billing issues nursing related, and I've been a peds assessment intake nurse. I didn't really plan any of it ahead, circumstances just brought it about, and you are right - right now we are just lucky to have jobs.

I've switched specialties then returned to them on and off for the 24 years I've been an LPN: I'd estimate my # of jobs to be around 10-12(I like variety and don't like staying with one job too long; the longest I've remained with one job is 5 years; usually I get the itch to move on after being with a job for 2 years!).

I am an RN.
In 11 years I have worked one year in a med-surg job and the past 10 in one ICU.
I found a place I liked, and didn't see any reason to change.

I was an LVN for three years, included:
Long Term Care
Prison
Assisted Living/Developmentally disabled group homes
Low Income Clinic
University Health Clinic (best hours ever! 2 months off a year!)
Not the best job history there, but I got to see some interesting things in variety....
I've only been an RN for 4 months in an ICU, I like it a lot, but I like variety more, so hopefully I can cross train after my year.
