How do you avoid distractions while studying?

Nursing Students are good at tuning out distractions. There are many ways to avoid distractions as we study: noise-reduction headphones, keep the music volume low, turn off the phone, turn off allnurses.com ... No, wait!! You cannot turn off allnurses.com! O.k., so how do you avoid distractions while studying?

Hi im trying to find this app. Is it available for iphones?

Am I the only one that MUST be at home to study? Libraries, Starbucks, anything like that, and I can't focus. People walking by, shuffling of papers, any small noise at all, and I'm focused on everything BUT my notes. Then again, I live on my own with no kids or pets, so perhaps this is why home is ideal for me. Sadly, this is also where the junk food is and who can really study without snacking? Really now... :o)

I feel the same way. I only study in the library if I'm already at school waiting for the next class to begin or if I'm studying with someone at the library. I know what you mean by studying at home when it's nice and quiet. I can't fully concentrate when there's too many people and people talking loudly either. I think that's why home is most ideal for me. Snacking does help studying. It helps you reenergize when you start to feel bleh and need a small break.

I turn off my phone and let everyone know about my schedule and that my time is limited. If they cannot respect that, I do not need them in my life. I worked too hard to sacrifice this journey. Its only a few years, they can get over it. I have always been there for everyone else and thats why it has taken me so long to start school again. It is my time to be selfish. While in nursing school, you have to put yourself first (with the exception of emergencies). That is what works for me and I will continue until I al done. Friends will come and go, but good nursing programs are hard to get into and stay in!

With that said, everyone is different and will find what works for them. Good luck to all my fellow nursing students!

I have a VERY hard time studying anywhere other than at home too. I am too much of a people watcher LOL!

I turned off all my notifications for everything. Nothing but my texts and phone tell me they need my attention. Even then I will use the nighttime feature to block everyone but a select few.

I also downloaded 2 apps called Simply Rain and Simply Noise. Both provide background noise. I read some research that pink noise actually helps you retain information better so I have been listening to that when studying for exams to block out background noise.

Another tip is only connecting my laptop to the internet if I need to; I cannot be distracted by something that's not there.

My last tip is not studying in coffee shops. Lol. They make me hungry and then I procrastinate by getting coffee and snacks multiple times. This isn't just a distraction but a bank account drain.

Hi im trying to find this app. Is it available for iphones?

I just found one called "self control for study". Though I'm not sure if it's available for all phones. May try different search words?

I'm downloading a self control thing for my phone and for my laptop. I found one called Cold Turkey that's supposed to be similar to Self Control, but for Windows. I find myself getting distracted by the internet too much.

I can't really study somewhere other than home, but home is also full of distractions. I originally planned on doing my studying in the office, but eventually I was getting distracted in there. I think I just need to move around and keep it different. I can study just fine in the living room on the couch one day, the next I'm distracted. So I think changing environment really helps me.

I have a separate room in my house that I use ONLY for studying. Unless I'm in the library at school, it is the only place I study. By keeping everything separated like that it is easier for me to focus.

I get away from my own environment.. I go to the university or town library, or if it is nice outside I will go to the park. Less distractions than at home where I start studying and before i know it I am distracted by doing the laundry I forgot about, the bills, patting the cat, listening to the parrot tell me he wants to come out (and yes, he really does tell me in english).... and the list goes on.

I actually have to go to Barnes and Nobles for hours and get out of my house, otherwise my 2 young kids nag me all day and I get nothing accomplished!!! I use ear buds to block out the noise and take notes as I re-listen to the lecture. It's quite a process...but it works for me!!!

Hi there!

You can get the app through the google play store for android devices, but its not available through the iphone app store...

Luckily you can download the app from mac, which created the app in the first place at:

SelfControl for Mac | MacUpdate

Good luck studying :)

I clicked your link and read through the reviews…some stating that it doesn't work correctly and causes issues on the whole computer. Now I'm hesitant! I thought this app sounded like a really great idea.

I keep all electronics out of sight and on silent. I also get up and move around if I feel my attention span is dwindling. If after 30 mins I start to get antsy, I go do a 5-10 minute activity and then come back. I also switch between studying subjects often. After 40 mins of one subject, I'll jump to another one; it helps me to stay engaged.
