It won't happen, but at least I can protest here ?

Our specials day has included maker space, a craft area with power tools and crafts such as breaking CDs to make mosaics. Can you say splinter madness? Hot glue guns are welcome in my school.?

Hot glue guns are the dodgeball of the arts and crafts world.

The bane of my existence.

OUCH! Hot glue is so awful!

I'm torn on wanting to ban things that cause injury (dodgeball, tetherball, glue guns, etc). While I don't want kids to get hurt, I want them to learn to safely navigate the world and they need to be exposed to "unsafe" things to learn how to work safely with those things.

And what can you do for a hot glue burn anyway? Run it under cool water, band-aid it. Really, the teacher that allows them to use those things should be taught to provide the first aid. It is usually just a small burn on the finger pad.

Or, let's be proactive - show the kids how to use it without getting burned and what to do for themselves if it happens. No, everything is reactive in the school setting.

Half the time, I feel like I am the sweeper - you know, cleaning up after other people's bad decisions.

Feeling grateful that I've never encountered a hot glue gun injury ?

The problem with hot glue gun injuries in school is that, from a medical standpoint, they are not too bad. Run under hot water, cover if needed- usually there is not broken skin. BUT... they hurt! A LOT. And kids think that means a big treatment where the magic nurse can take away the pain. Unfortunately, burns get worse before they get better and kids freak out.

Kids can't use em here but the teachers make up for it.

We have 4 hot glue guns in the makers space, not the little low temp kind, the melt your skin off hot kind. 2-5 are allowed to use the glue guns with supervision. Somehow, every year, it's only the 4th grade that cannot manage to come out unscathed. I usually see 5-10 glue gun burns a day during peek science project week.

Hot glue guns are the reason I stock topical cooling gel. Doesn't do much but help soothe the initial burn, but that is enough. Easy on, easy out the door as well.

A Hot glue gun also were the cause of the one of worst burns I saw in school. HS student was dared by a couple of other students to put his palm into a pile of fresh very hot glue. 2nd degree burn the size of a quarter in the middle of his palm. Called Mom and she was livid...at him, for doing something so stupid.

I usually buy aloe at the end of summer and give for any burn. Have found sometimes people just want something on it.
