RNs who are willing to work in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas (Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen) can get sign-on bonuses of up to $50,000.
I have never received a sign-on bonus. In addition, a good facility does not need big sign-on bonuses to attract and retain nurses. Only the crappy facilities with bad working conditions must resort to giving bonuses.
A $50,000 SIGN ON BONUS?? As in-on top of base salary?? Why?
The Rio Grande Valley hospitals have a horrid reputation and they can't keep nurses. I get flyers in the mail at least every other month and I even get phone calls at home from recruiters trying to get me to work down there for big bucks. They have even called my co-workers in the recovery room while on duty trying to get them to work there.
I learned a long time ago in Dallas that unusually big sign-on bonuses are often a red flag. That's not always the case, but I've learned to proceed with caution when one hospital in particular is offering such big money compared to others in the area.
In the early 2000's, I remember some Dallas hospitals offering big sign on bonuses of $5000 for LVN's and $10-20,000 for RN's but they had to sign contracts of two years I believe. As an LVN at the time, I got a $1000 sign-on with no contract and I also got another $1000 after my first year as a retention bonus with no strings attached.
So yes, LVN's do get sign-on bonuses but it most likely depends on the local job market/demand.

So today in class I was easy dropping(well there is no nice way to say it!!!) on a couple of students talking about sign on bonus for nurses. Well one of the students was saying that LPN's never get sign on bonus and they are just for RN's. I hate to say this but they full on started going at it.....I think we are ready for our braek and all have been togheter to long to say the least;)
I was wondering if this was true and if any of you lovely LPN's out there did get a sign on bonus
Thanks:monkeydance:
