Heated discussion in class....

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

So today in class I was easy dropping(well there is no nice way to say it!!!) on a couple of students talking about sign on bonus for nurses. Well one of the students was saying that LPN's never get sign on bonus and they are just for RN's. I hate to say this but they full on started going at it.....I think we are ready for our braek and all have been togheter to long to say the least;)

I was wondering if this was true and if any of you lovely LPN's out there did get a sign on bonus

Thanks:monkeydance:

the biggest sign on bonus i have seen for lvn's was $3000 at a long term care facility..but i have seen mega bucks for the rn's . not to long ago in south texas there was a sign on bonus for rn's in the amount of $50,000

Here in San Antonio I've seen many jobs offering sign on bonus for LVN's and even a few for CNA's.;)

RNs who are willing to work in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas (Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen) can get sign-on bonuses of up to $50,000.

I have never received a sign-on bonus. In addition, a good facility does not need big sign-on bonuses to attract and retain nurses. Only the crappy facilities with bad working conditions must resort to giving bonuses.

A $50,000 SIGN ON BONUS?? As in-on top of base salary?? Why?

On topic-I've seen LPNs offered sign on bonuses, though usually for FT positions only, and sometimes only for nights. (same with RN sign ons around here)

Here in Louisiana, many facilities offer nice sign on bonuses to RN's, but very rarely to LPN's. RN's usually get $3000 to $10,000 for a sign on. I recently saw LPN sign on for $500. Go figure!

:monkeydance: here in south georgia, lpn's can get up to 1,500.00 and rn's 2,500.00  just depends on where and the type of facility one works at. so yes!!:rotfl: lpn's do get a sign on bonus:rotfl:

I was offered $3000 at one potential job, and I ended up taking the job with the $2000 bonus. They were the same for RN's and LPN's.

It's even creeped north of the 49th. It's mainly LTC's but the bonus is offered to full, p/t, AND casual PNs after completion of a certain service period.

We'll never see it in the hospitals--we're publicly funded and taxpayers would flip if they ever heard of it happening.

Yes, as Fiona59 said, it is here in Canada, but not in hospitals. I have not heard of it in LTC in Ontario but there likely is places offering bonuses in underserviced areas. I have recently heard of a home care firm offering sign on bonuses ($2000.) in areas north of Toronto.

A $50,000 SIGN ON BONUS?? As in-on top of base salary?? Why?

The Rio Grande Valley hospitals have a horrid reputation and they can't keep nurses. I get flyers in the mail at least every other month and I even get phone calls at home from recruiters trying to get me to work down there for big bucks. They have even called my co-workers in the recovery room while on duty trying to get them to work there.

I learned a long time ago in Dallas that unusually big sign-on bonuses are often a red flag. That's not always the case, but I've learned to proceed with caution when one hospital in particular is offering such big money compared to others in the area.

In the early 2000's, I remember some Dallas hospitals offering big sign on bonuses of $5000 for LVN's and $10-20,000 for RN's but they had to sign contracts of two years I believe. As an LVN at the time, I got a $1000 sign-on with no contract and I also got another $1000 after my first year as a retention bonus with no strings attached.

So yes, LVN's do get sign-on bonuses but it most likely depends on the local job market/demand.

I got a $300.00 bonus, paid 1/2 after 3 months then the other 1/2 after 6 months. Around here RN's get up to $2500.00 depending where they work. Hardly worth signing for as I lost the advantage in taxes.
