there is a school in atlanta, ga that is putting out "basic care nurses" they advertise that they get all the skills of lpn in six months, with no core classes, no nclex, no regulation at all and all for the price of $6,600 ruffly. oh and guess what is it is taught by "docs".
this makes me mad!!!!!!!:angryfire who do they think they are?:stone i am working hard for my lpn, not to mention the stressing over it:sniff: , these people are not doing any of that and are calling themselfs nurses!!!!
have any of you heard of this and what do you think? are there any others out there?:uhoh21:
:angryfire
Awwww, maybe we are just jealous.
After all: "Nightingale students earn national certifications in six areas: phlebotomy, EKG, front office and back office skills, acute and chronic long-term care, glucose specialist and medical administration skills." (See post #9).
Front AND back office skills.....gosh.
Seriously, this is really sad.
I wrote the Georgia and SC BON's http://www.llr.state.sc.us/POL/Nursing/.
I also wrote the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/index.html
and the AUgusta Chronicle (where the Medical College of Ga is)http://augustachronicle.com/
So far no acknowledgements but maybe someone will take note.

Good God - they're gonna let these wannabe hacks give meds??
I don't want some fool off the street that doesn't even know what a nurse is OR ISN'T giving a vitamin to MY DOG!! I sure wouldn't want them doing a chemstick on me! What if it's out of range? Do they get to write their own sliding scale too? (Trained by docs, after all...)
Here's to hoping I never need medical care in GA! :chair:
If their BON takes this lying down, that says a lot about them, don't you think?
I find this outrageous! I also think it is very interesting that physicians are teaching students about basic nursing skills under the premise that they want to keep with Florence Nightengale's principles. Can anyone tell me how many physicians they know which would even have the slightest clue as to what Florence Nightengale's principles would have been? I know I could not!
PRN - Can you post a sample of the letter you wrote? I am ready to send off an email also!
I think "medical administration skills" are probably admin duties (ie medical secretarial type work) rather than medication administrations. OTOH, given the shonkiness of the whole thing I wouldn't bet on it!
I want to know about being a glucose specialist - I suppose it means learning how to take a blood sugar (cause that's soemthing I'd pay $6600 for), but maybe it means knowing everything about the glucose molecule. Hmm.
Omigosh... I'm almost embarrassed to be from Georgia after reading that ad. I hear that nursing schools in Atlanta do have some long waiting lists, so it sounds like they are trying to take advantage of impatient people with too much money and no sense.
I hope to graduate an ADN program in the spring and I don't think i've spent $2k total on my education so far. Hello, financial aid! I get paid to go to school; the estimate of $2k is for gas, assorted childcare, and the expenses of my first two quarters before financial aid kicked in.
I'm forwarding that ad and the links to the GA BON to my classmates and teachers.

:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire and the village idiot with a 10th grade education can go through a 6 month program and start off at around $14.00/hr???:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire
that's the most insulting part. that theses people believe they have the 'solution' to the nursing shortage, by lowering the standard of what a nurse is :angryfire:angryfire . i know people may find this hard to believe, but not everyone is cut out to be a nurse!!!! and i love the part about how 'unlike traditional nursing programs, these classes are taught by physicians'. hello?!?!?!? what do doctors know aout being nurses!! are people stupid enough to fall for this and enroll? and what happens when they find out they are not really nurses, and cannot get a job as a nurse?
i have the feeling that the people enrolling in this program cannot qualify for college entrance, and this program is taking advantage of that. much like medical assisting programs, they cost too much and the pay is terrible. people often do not research what they are getting into, and will not go the extra mile to fulfill the requirements for college entrance, such as high school education, sat's, etc. patients do not deserve to be thrown into the care of people who cannot persevere through a traditional nursing program. and my really big question is, what do doctors know about nursing? it is a completely different practice!
that says it all. not for nothing, but if they don't have the sense to get a hs diploma, they're certainly not going to see through this scam. besides, it must be legit, if doctors are teaching it :chuckle :chuckle
I sent an e-mail to Alberta's version of your BONs - about the "school" they have in Alberta. I haven't heard anything back. I hope they are taking their time because they are investigating it. My main question was about the title "Basic Care Nurse" that the Georgia school claims to have secured in Alberta. They do list it on their Alberta site but with no information other than that they have it trademarked - as in a brand name like Coke or Pepsi. Doesn't THAT sound a little shady?

It is illegal in Texas to call yourself a nurse if you are not licensed as such (same for MD too, by the way). Sounds shady to me.
