Published

The title "nurse" became protected by law in 1903, with the first state nurse registration acts. Mason, Leavitt & Chaffee, Plicy & Politics in Nursing and Health Care, , 2002, p.22. It is protected by law in all states, with authority resting in the BONs. That is what Flo wanted, nurses, educated by, overseen by NURSES. In 1872, Nightengale wrote a letter to Bellevue Hosp. (NYC), advising nursing and medicine be separate, with nursing being overseen by (an educated) nurse. (p.21)

The function of a BON is to protect the public from misuse of the title, and from imcompetent persons. Without a license from a BON, it is illegal to call yourself a nurse.

And i'm beyond angry that someone's turned the LPN education into a fast food drive through set up.

NRSKaren always got the goods! You go girl! LOL!

I will also be writing to the Georgia Board of Nursing. We cannot allow schools like this to proliferate. We must not allow nursing to lose its scientific, theoretical, and critical-thinking background. By calling these graduates "nurses", we reduce our profession to a task-oriented, technician-type of assistant to the physician. I am outraged! :angryfire OK, I'll calm down now and write a well-thought out letter to Sylvia Bond, the Executive Director of the Georgia Board of Nursing.

What are these people thinking?! OK-- so maybe you can become a med assistant in 6 mo:uhoh3: -but not a NURSE!!! - around here, the closet they will come to any sort of certifiable job is a nurses aide -- which is a wonderful help to our nurses -- they have a state certified program and are held responsible for "basic care" competencies. There is NO WAY that they would call themselves nurses -- since they are made aware of scope of practice issues in their educational process.

Have fired off a note to GA BON myself. We need to let them know that there is an issue and that many of us would frown upon relocating to a state wherein the value of the "real" nurse's role is trivialized like this.

Gee whiz! What a publicity stunt! Can't believe this program is for real. What surprizes me too is that they are saying you can make $14/hour when you graduate...hunh?? Our new RNs start at $16.35/hour!

This guy says he set up a school in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 2000? With his "nurses" working in over 70 hospitals in Canada and the U.S. I have NEVER heard of the "Basic Care Nurse" in my life and CANNOT believe that they can graduate in 6 months. Even PSWs (Canadian equivalent of CNAs) go to school for a full year in Ontario now. Gone are the days where you can walk in off the street and take care of people. Perhaps it's different in Alberta but I have NEVER heard of these "basic care nurses" in Ontario. They are certainly not recognized by our CNO (Ontario equivalent of your state BONs). This also burns me up. I am a new RN and I have the utmost respect for all of the RPNs (same as LPN) I work with - each and every one of them is far more experienced than I and each and every one of them has taught me something that can only come from experience. RN or RPN nursing is a tough job with a ton of responsibility and the educational road to both is long and exhausting. I deeply resent this jerk passing off the "education" he is providing as a nursing education.

I just did a bunch of searches for "basic care nurse" and "nightingale medical institute" (and "nightEngale medical institute", I have seen it spelled both ways) for Edmonton, for Alberta, and for Canada. I found absolutely NOTHING. So - I went to the Better Business Bureau for Edmonton and typed in nightingale. Well - I found them but not as the Nightingale Medical Institute but as "The Nightingale Academy". They do not state anything about becoming a "basic care nurse" - they state that they "... rank as the top Health Care Support Worker program in Edmonton." Seems to me they are the same as a PSW (or CNA) and the link to the "Basic Care Nurse Program"" and "Basic Care Nurse Association" refers to them as care attendants. And I know it's the right group because there is a link to the very ad that this thread is about in Atlanta Georgia! Now - I'm going to check out the board of nurses in Alberta and see what they think about this mess! I'm fuming~!

Yes hard to believe even in Australia. Still they did de-regulate the 'nurses' for physically/mentally disabled care (sometimes known as 'challenged' persons) the 'nurse' qualification being dropped some years ago and take on "carers" paid at a lower rate than nurses. At least when they took people off the street they made them do a short course on 'caring skills' - I wonder if this is what they are doing in Canada but call them 'nurses'?!

Whatever the outcome of anyone's investigations, NURSING is not to be be-littled in any way. Yes I too worked very hard to get my registration.

Mister Chris :angryfire

After 4 yrs. as an LPN I'm making $14.50/hr !!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire And the village idiot with a 10th grade education can go through a 6 month program and start off at around $14.00/hr???:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire

I wish more nurses would write the GBN. I know I will.

:angryfire Ridiculous!!!! They are ripping people off! and defrauding the community.

I can get my BSN for $9,000--I wouldn't pay $6,000 for a six month PSEUDO_NURSE program.

The local community colleges offer EXCELLENT training for med assist, pleb, CNA etc & LPN/ RN---real licensed nurses and it doesn't cost an arm & leg.

This whole thing gives a bad name to faith based programs. Private christian schools here offer education for real nurses--although, they are very expensive. 2 year nurse program costs $36,000! that doesn't include pre-nursing. SOOOOOO anyone looking for a religiously affiliated training program would flock to this-what a deal! A christian based "nurse" program for the low, low price of only $6,000! Not too christian-like to rip people off!

I wouldn't have a problem with the training if it was legitimate med assist training...not called "nursing" and the institute not named after Nightingale!

Tell me....how does an MD train someone to be an assistant to an RN???? What a laugh!

Oh--we could all go on & on....:angryfire
