there is a school in atlanta, ga that is putting out "basic care nurses" they advertise that they get all the skills of lpn in six months, with no core classes, no nclex, no regulation at all and all for the price of $6,600 ruffly. oh and guess what is it is taught by "docs".
this makes me mad!!!!!!!:angryfire who do they think they are?:stone i am working hard for my lpn, not to mention the stressing over it:sniff: , these people are not doing any of that and are calling themselfs nurses!!!!
have any of you heard of this and what do you think? are there any others out there?:uhoh21:

Lived in Edmonton for 8 years and this is the first I've heard of these "nurses".
There is a place that trains NA's (nursing assistants) that uses Nightingale in their name. Sorry, have a lousy cold and the memory is a bit off right now.
I remember in 2001 their ads had something about "being the eyes and ears of the registered nurse" and had pictures of happy smiling women wearing stethoscopes and hugging small children. We complained about it at the time because it just didn't sound right and as LPN's we felt it demeaned us. The ads disappeared for a while but it sounds like they are back.
"Front and back office" and admin duties do seem to be the same thing, RN4ICU - I'm goign to put my not noticing that down to night duty :) I assume "front office" is receptionisty, telephonistic skills, appointments etc, but what the !@#^ would "back office" skills be? The only picture I'm getting is a little too redolent of 'come in, "basic care nurse" Jones, I've got some "dictation" for you.' Can I attribute this to nights, too?!

From what I know "back office" refers to: phlebotomy, ECG, vitals, injections (IM, SC and ID), doing the dipstick type UA's (I can't think of the name for the life of me), I think it includes urine HCG (but don't take my word for it)...yeah."Front and back office" and admin duties do seem to be the same thing, RN4ICU - I'm goign to put my not noticing that down to night duty :) I assume "front office" is receptionisty, telephonistic skills, appointments etc, but what the !@#^ would "back office" skills be? As a phlebotomist I was trained and able to do all of those, with the exception of injections, the only injection I was allowed to give was the TB skin test. I was also allowed to perform ABG's. I also was also expected to do lots of things that the Clinical Lab Scientist should do: culture urine, run UA's, make slides, run ABG's...I left the facility that expected me to do all these things because my butt was on the line constantly and it made me hate working there.
My older sister is a MA and she can also set casts but she works for an orthopedist and he taught her himself.

Yep - that's the one. Here's their website. I have tried to insert it as a hyperlink three times now and each time it redirects me to the Allnurses main forum page and loses my post. So, you'll have to copy and paste for now.

let me ask you, if you hit their nerve, are you liable??? are you insured for malpractice?
My older sister is a MA and she can also set casts but she works for an orthopedist and he taught her himself.
he is then responsible for any and all complications that the pt suffers if there's a mishap. the irony is, if he's called to court, he'd bring your sister in with him in a minute! if she said... 'he tought me to do it this way,' or whatever, he could deny that he ever said that and he *might* get off. but your sister would lose her job of course, and have a hard time working again.

It would not have surprised me in the least, actually. There has been so much talk of letting non licensed people get "certified" to give meds, I couldn't imagine these "basic care nurses" being denied the priviledge of masquerading as nurses to the fullest extent possible.
Medical administration skills...I wonder what those are - must be that front AND back office thing...ooooohhhhh - they were so proud of that they mentioned it twice.
It looks to be a medical assistant program. Why the h*ll don't they just call it that? I suppose because the doctors think their specially-trained handmaidens should be called nurses - even though the title is legally protected for those who have earned it. That, or they think they can sucker folks who don't know what a nurse is into thinking that they are becoming one. Either way, it is unethical.
