Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

I must say I only caught the last 20 mins and I love it. After I get my BS in nursing I am going to medical school. It has always been a dream of mine. That show made me realize that everything I do and all the courses I take is for that goal. Just the thought that can be me...

YOU HAVE TO BE AT LEAST HALF CRAZY TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL NOW DAYS. THE WAY MALPRACTICE IS GOING, MOST PRIVATE PRACTICE PHYSICIANS WILL BE EXTINCT AND/OR BANKRUPT. THANKS TO THE UNDEREDUCATED PUBLIC AND FRIVILOUS LAWSUITES AND THREATS.

how true!!! i felt the same way when i was a school bus driver several years ago when the simpsons show portrayed the school bus driver as an idiot who allowed anything, and who smoked and listened to music with his earphones. what an awful misrepresentation that was. most people don't want to be school bus drivers anymore due to the job's challenges.

bus drivers take safety classes twice a year, and where i worked, they had to be trained to perform cpr. i know; i was their instructor. and the company i worked for stressed the importance of safety.

it isn't easy to make 66 kids sit quietly in their seats until they get home after sitting in classes all day, but it can be done. yes, i did that too. i told my passengers that i cared about them and their safety while riding my bus. i didn't want anyone to be hurt.

there were times when i pulled over to the side of the road to stop a nosebleed, kill a bee that flew in a window, and was even hit headon by a drunk driver with kids in my bus.

i didn't yell at the kids, i used good psychology on them. one time a very unruly kid handed me a condom. i thanked him, put it on the shelf beside me, and nothing else was said or done. i learned to not only think like the kids think, but to also think one step ahead of them.

yes some kids hated me. why? because i cared enough about them to get them to school and back home safely. and in order to do that, there were times i had to remove a kid from the bus and take him into the principal's office. in fact, my boss told me i held the alltime record of sending in reports with proof of what the kid, have had numerous kids kicked off the bus, have been threatened by them, but i refused to back down, because i knew if i did, they had the upper hand; not me.

when i left that job, my boss gave me a pizza party, and invited the entire staff of over 100 people to it. i was also presented with a check of $375.00, and a letter of high recommendation, and a cake was even decorated with the words, "good luck fran. we'll miss you.

just so you know, i'm not trying to toot my own horn here; i'm just telling you how challenging being a conscientious bus driver really is.

We also have to consider that the producers would like some bad publicity from nurses because this increases their ratings by giving it a buzz. So our intention could backfire and cause more viewership at least temporary. Alternatively, we can also use this potential publicity as a springboard to educating the public. I just dont know if we have enough clout at this time to change a show's script but as we continue educating the public in other areas well get stronger. -maybe we can create a nurse drama ourselves!

That's exactly what I said a while back when the thread first came out. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought this way.

Ditto on that thought. Also, I think all the complaining makes us look like a bunch of whiny-butts which is even worse than what these producers dream up, because it's coming directly from nurses. Like the bus driver poster said, people in her job were unfairly portrayed by the Simpsons. Would it have accomplished anything if the bus drivers of the country collectively wrote to the Simpson's producers? I doubt it. This happens all the time...look at the grief lawyers get! Heck, they can't all be immoral shysters. Bedsides, I've seen polls that rank nurses as the most ethical of all professions. (Here's one: http://www.afscme.org/publications/action/una041_b.htm ) There's something to toot our horns about!

Oh my gosh -- you're serious? I thought your first post was a joke! You have some serious work to do if you plan on getting into medical school. You may want to consider taking a basic English class.

Why bother going to nursing school if you don't want to be a nurse? Why don't you save that spot in nursing school for someone that actually wants to be a nurse and will help with the shortage?

you must didn't see the last post. I didn't hear none of the negative comments about the nurses. I think that was rude and comments make some think that nurse don't do anything. But that show or that comment is not going to stop me from going medical school. I volunteer at a hosp and I see LPN being nasty to CNA, RNs toward LPN and the Dr. toward the RN. I see it everyday and I am still going to go to get my BS in nursing and move on to MD school.

so don't be confused!

I really wish I'd never seen that website! I'm so disappointed by what I read. Fortunately, the medical students, residents and attendings I've worked with in the first 9 months of my career have been nothing like those posting on studentdoctor.net. I expect that most of those people will have a rude awakening once they're out of school. I don't really understand their need to put down nurses so much.

ok so a friend of mine found out what some md students feel about grey's anatomy, check it out and then tell me how you feel after reading their comments! http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=187490

 I did watched Grey's anatomy and I don't think that I will watch it again. They talked about nurses like they were the lowest form of medical personnel in the hospital and that they didn't know what they were talking about. I can't stand that intern who stated "did you call me a nurse" with a disgusted face. This is really disappointing and even more so that one of the producer's is an RN if you look at the credits.

I never write networks either as I'm really not all that interested in TV, but I do watch some shows. Grey's Anatomy was such a huge disappointment, especially as it has replaced one of my favorite shows, Boston Legal. (Love James Spader ever since "Less Than Zero". Just love him)

I fired off an email to ABC also in which I wished the worst possible demise for Grey's Anatomy. I found the show to be irresponsible towards the majority of the health care team -- and that healthcare cannot function without nurses.

Stitchie, first of all don't worry "Boston Legal" will be coming back on the 24th.

Also I am a pre nursing student, I am taking pre reqs right now so I can apply for the program at RCC in Medford/Grants pass area in Oregon. I think right now I want to work in the Hospital arena, and granted I don't know everything that a nurse does, I am sure I have the basics. Basically a nurse does pretty much everything but diagnose and surgery, please correct me if I am wrong. But I have noticed that they over simplify the importance of a Nurse. I realize that a Nurse is the backbone of the medical field. That is one reason I like the movie "Patch Adams" they gave, atleast in my mind some respect to nurses. I could be wrong, but I just want to make some sort of contributions, and besides, this would be the best way to find out if my theories, and thoughts are mislead.

I wonder if we could catch the names of the doctors and look them up.. you know.. send some fan mail... give them a call...let them know how great we think they are since they are the Beings known as Doctors, so we can worship them like they deserve and grovel at their feet.. *sigh* oh to be that spectacular...

I decided to view this show for the first time tonite.

What a disgrace.

I hope those organizations involved in organ donation get wind of this week's episode and chew up and spit out the producers of this show.

This is NOT even entertainment.
