Grey's Anatomy Premier!!! + How to Contact Show Creators

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

so yeah... what did you all think of this latest episode of the show?

i really love the part where the DOCTORS are at the patient's bedside for SIX HOURS monitoring them for signs of brain death, and calling the family, etc. am I crazy or is that a wee bit unrealistic?? never mind the liver transplant patient being so alert so soon after surgery... i had the impression they were a little out of it for a while. of course i am probably showing my ignorance in both these situations... but seriously, WHERE are the nurses in this hospital???

Yeah, I know, I'm nitpicking... but it's what I love to do with shows like this! I do like some parts of it. I can find something good about almost any medical show. But, I hope the next one is a bit better.

hehe, if we keep watching just to see how disgusting it is, we're giving "them" exactly what they want. :chuckle :p

I think three weeks is the charm and I now have a good feel for the show. For me, it lacks depth so I'll only watch it as a last resort.

I watched it! :p

I'm embarassed (sp?)to admit it. It's like watching a bad car accident waiting to see what happens. Oh well.

Did anyone get a real response to an email they sent to the show yet? I'm sure they're aware of the feedback. They just don't want to stress it.

I didn't think too much of it except for the fact that there was barely any reference to nurses period. I suppose they would rather omit nurses altogether rather than give them a realistic and positive role in the show in case they mess it up again. :chuckle

heh heh, Peachy you are right on!! I still do kinda like the show though, just cause it's medical and that's interesting to me, even if they do screw up the realities, well, frequently. It's a "bonding" time with my friends too. I guess I should stop complaining if I'm gonna watch it!! :imbar

A thought came to mind.. I wonder if this show is directed/produced by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Similar mind sets.. :coollook:

I havent seen the show yet, so I cant comment.... But has anyone seen HOUSE M.D.? That is totally unrealistic as well..... This whole team of doctors, with 'House" at the head of them, takes total care of hard to diagnose patients... no nurses anywhere but a few quick pans to a nursing station... one of these docs even emptied a foley!!!! Yeah right...... :uhoh3:

I'm always amazed at these 'doctor' shows that show the docs doing everything from nursing care to lab, xray and even PT/OT. I wonder if the other professions get as miffed as nurses do?? LOL!

good point mattsmom!

I am currently a BSN student and I am a big fan of Gray's ANatomy - Not a fan of the way they represent nurses on the screen but, given the scenario who would be. In the last fews years I have yet to see a doctor or a resident who spends that much time with their patients, provides that much care, or for that matter treats a nurse the way they are being depicted on TV. I can't beleive the stupidity of the individual who would venture to cast such a dark light on nursing but, I suppose if your trying to catch peoples attention and make money than people do stupid things. I just hope they find time to enlighten our role as patient advocates, the people who provide the majority of patient care, and that producers decide we should get some credit for the long hard hours we put in to make a difference in the lives of others. Just a note I thought it ironic, kind of humorous actually, how many times nurses have been called on to tell a resident what to do or have been a vital assistant in something because they were unsure of how to do it?? As we all are at someitmes. I have seen it more than a few times. I am curois as to how residents and physicians feel mass media is characterising them? and nurses. SHame on them not onyl for casting us in a negative light but for also casting physicians with such a negative attitudes for nurses. I have yet to come across a physican who treats nurses in the manner they are treated on teh show. Physicians sand Nurses alike should be dissapointed that ABC would portray them as such individuals with such negative attitudes towards other healthcare proffesionals. Then again it is a made for TV drama.

I am a fourth year med student and I hate the show. I wish they would show the residents actually studying, trying to raise families, and take care of themselves... the things that really happen during residency. That wouldn't make much for good watching though...
