Grey's Anatomy Premier!!! + How to Contact Show Creators

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

BTW, what I find really ironic is that they continuously refer to nurses as catty and unable to get along.

Sadly they have a point. In my 28 yrs, I've found this to be largely true for too many nurses in groups. Its likely why nurses have so much trouble organizing to effect our own profession ...many of my own colleagues prefer petty bickering to solidarity, sadly.

If we could organize and respect each other like the AMA does, just imagine what we could accomplish! I can dream... :)

you must didn't see the last post. I didn't hear none of the negative comments about the nurses. I think that was rude and comments make some think that nurse don't do anything. But that show or that comment is not going to stop me from going medical school. I volunteer at a hosp and I see LPN being nasty to CNA, RNs toward LPN and the Dr. toward the RN. I see it everyday and I am still going to go to get my BS in nursing and move on to MD school.

so don't be confused!

:rotfl: If your penmanship is as bad as your grammar and spelling, I am sure you'll make a great Doc!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Pink collar ghetto?...wow.... I'm speechless. :o

Yep.... When I think back to alot of the things I learned about nursing in college I often shakemy head in dismay. Ironically I had no idea how damaging these ideas were. Many of the professors who taught these classes were women.

The stereotypes we present to our children are the true injustice. Those old attitudes have to be changed.

I don't consider myself a feminist in the true sense of the word, but why can't a modern women or man be taught to associate themselves with nursing?

I've said for years that if it were possible to get nurses to really agree on anything and unite, we'd be a SERIOUSLY powerful lobby. There is a sad tendency to bicker and squabble instead, though.

I haven't given up the idea, mind you.

I saw this the other day after DVRing it. I thought it was ok. The comedy left me a little wanting but I found the interactions between all the characters to be really good.

Though I was shocked that all they did was complain ALL the time.. :-)

I was so excited to watch this show and my heart sank when they said that crap! I was hoping in the end that jerk dr. would have been shown up by the RN. I hate how they have the RN's in the background. As a pre-RN student, it makes me crazy to think my dream and passion for nursing will feel like a fight to get credit and respect for my medical knowlege and hard work. Not to mention the other people out there that are interested in nursing and decide not to do it because of the sterotypes of the profession and the rude light they show dr.'s in. Are dr.'s really this way? We need a nursing show to give the glory back to the REAL hero's - the NURSES! Can I get an "AMEN"?!

I only watched that first episode, then clicked the tv back and forth this past week, and only saw a Volkswagen commercial. Does any one know any of the other sponsors? :angryfire I have a few things to say to THEM! Thanks, KJ

I must say I only caught the last 20 mins and I love it. After I get my BS in nursing I am going to medical school. It has always been a dream of mine. That show made me realize that everything I do and all the courses I take is for that goal. Just the thought that can be me...

i am happy that you want to become a doctor, but as a nursing student i only saw that scene and was offended by it :angryfire . the fact that this show is a back handed slap in the face amazes me that you could defend it like that. i am happy that you are going to med school, then maybe you would appreciate nurses more (in the real world the first thing doctors are told are to be nice to the nurses- they know whats going on and can help you out BIG time)

"you're the pig who called meredith a nurse...i hate you on principle."

april 3, 2005 -- proving that its series premiere was no fluke, tonight's episode of abc's "grey's anatomy" offered 18.2 million viewers more of its surgical intern characters' explicit contempt for nursing. but perhaps the episode's most notable feature was its relentless portrayal of physician nursing, as the physicians basically handled all meaningful patient care by themselves. show creator shonda rhimes wrote the episode. the show's attractive lead actors and yearning guitar pop soundtrack seem to be persuading viewers to overlook some bogus writing and less than credible plotting, and it is shaping up to be a major new force in fostering inaccurate attitudes toward nursing. read more and send our new instant letter!
