Grey's Anatomy Premier!!! + How to Contact Show Creators

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

ok so a friend of mine found out what some md students feel about grey's anatomy, check it out and then tell me how you feel after reading their comments! http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=187490

:o

I checked out the website to the student doctor web page! It is awful the way they talk about nurses! *LOL* I signed up with my own name on their web site and am thinking of writing a response to the comments!

EVERYONE should post on the site and give them a piece of you mind.... ESPECIALLY if you have a doctorate, just to prove we are not mindless idiots that only concern ourselves with petty cat fights like the med students suggested.

Urgh.

Every time I try and ask a rational question over there regarding their "discussions" on nursing, the thread always gets closed and swept under the rug.

And the REALLY sad thing is some of these people making the statements appear to be established physicians.:imbar

Depending on what their TOS is, the posts might be seen as personal attacks (against them), and be pitched.

Besides, life is too short to dwell among those airheads. They'll get a reality check one day.

BTW, what I find really ironic is that they continuously refer to nurses as catty and unable to get along.

The irony was their cattiness towards a group of people that they (CHOOSE TO) not have a clue about.

Well i guess if they have that opinion of the nursing profession than hopefully they will understand when nurses have the same opinion of their profession. Fortunetly, for me stuff like this doesn't bother me. I happen to have way more important things going on in my life to worry about who doesn't like nursing this week, like for instance clipping my toe nails. Last week I was at a dinner party thrown by one of my husbands co-workers. I was chatting with some people about how nursing school was and this women (whom I have never met) comes up and starts telling me about how awful nursing is and blah blah. So I was like well how long have you been a nurse? and she was like I am not a nurse I am a mechanical enginneer. I looked at one of the women i had been talking to and said "oh, you have heard of mechanical enginneers right? that is code for unemployed" we busted up laughing. she made some comment. and I said I apologize, I have just never met an employed enginneer before, where do you work? and she was like well I used to work at so and so but they downsized. and i said well like i said i never met an employed enginneer!!

Asside from the nurse bashing, (hey we are guilty of bashing them, aren't we?), that site is worth checking out! I just spent the last 2 hours reading some really interesting posts. The religious debate thread is great. Check it out for an interesting read!

Great story, Kris!!:chuckle

Sbic, I have a confession. I love the "Parents are funny in this process" thread in the pre-allopathic. When I was pre-med, I would read that thread daily. Although the poster that really MADE that thread work doesn't post anymore (ALWAYS about her mom coming in at 4 or 5 in the morning and making suggestions how to improve her chances of getting in, or wanting to know if she can open her mail from a med school, etc), the thread seems to be picking up again.

Don't get me wrong. There are some great doctors and pre-med people on that forum. It's just that a few of them have left such a bad taste in my mouth that I often forget the former.

That's right. People are people. We are more like than unlike them. I get the same enjoyment reading the thoughtful and intelligent posts there as I do here. It's really kind of strange that nurses and doctors love to pick on one another so, as neither of us could practice without the other! Maybe that's it...neither profession wants to admit their dependence on the other. ;)

OMG Peachy!!! I know what thread you are talking about... The one with Silverchola and her mom... Her mom would wake her REALLY every morning or call her at work to ask about her "pre-med" dilemma. Wasn't she a hoot!!!

I must confess too. I read SDN and post on the site... Some of them are down right snotty and some are down right rude. But some of them are very nice and very helpful.

Honestly I think most of them have no idea what nurses really do. They only see things for the persepctive of a "pre-med volunteer". It's the same attitude nurses get from folks in the community.

I'll be honest, I never wanted to be a nurse. Only until I worked in the hospital close to some really outstanding nurses did I even consider it as a valid career option.

In college I took an upper level Sociology class, "Women and Society". I was told that nursing was a "pink -collar ghetto" and that was the attitude that would have to be changed before folks saw nursing as a profession.

This was in the late '90's not so long ago. Future doctors and the general public need to be educated about nursing.

I don't post very often, but I do read the posts. I saw the show and kinda liked it. Many people took offense to the show and how people were portrayed and I agree with many, but I have to say its only a tv show which I usually watch as entertainment. Remember its not a documentary. But it would be nice to see a show where people are portayed as professional, compassionate, intelligent, etc. But how many of these things (on the show) have actually happened in real life? I've see quite a bit of that crap myself and friends also tell me horror stories of docs, nurse, aides, techs, etc, but I've also experienced and heard many wonderful healthcare professional stories out there. Just my 2 pennies!
